The Pentagon is treating the spate of mysterious freezer malfunctions that spoiled food at military bases across the United States in August as a suspected hack, according to four officials familiar with the matter.
One of the officials said the military investigators were in touch with their French counterparts about a similar cyberattack on commercial freezers that disrupted supermarkets there earlier this month.
Reuters was not able to ascertain how far along the Pentagon’s investigation was or whether it had reached any conclusions about what happened or who might be responsible.

The generals are going to have to make do without ribeyes.
So, the guard at the gate is a total waste. Unbelievable!
Demonstration...to various parties.
Ditto!
Everything is connected to the internet nowadays. Many appliances will not work unless hooked up to the internet. I have seen dishwashers that force you to hook up to the internet.
I heard that the issue is the default password was 1234 on the French freezers. Probably the same for the military ones. Who would think their appliance would get hacked?
internet of everything is the spy of everything
The more I see stupid crap like this, the more I think I should just start taking over countries for myself.
Fealty and tribute would be great additions to my portfolio.
MY 1965 REFRIGERATOR/FREEZER WORKS FINE-—NO INTERNET
I agree. I have decided that many new cool items are going to be more trouble than they are worth.
“ Why would the freezers be connected to the internet?”

As an aside, smart refrigerators and similar “smart” devices all have their unique individual IP address.
Hackers heat French supermarket fridges, sparking fires and spoiling food
(Reuters, Oct 12 - at start of Paris riots)
Unquestionably China or Iran.
“Why would the freezers be connected to the internet?”
I agree. Who in their right mind connect their freezer to the internet. Even if I could, I would NEVER do that.
What idiot allowed inet connected appliances to be installed in military facilities in the first place?
As long as the strawberries are safe.
I can’t believe the stupidity of having appliances connected to the internet.
They know exactly how many strawberries they have.
I guess you’re not concerned that you paid for the food that spoiled? I mean if you paid taxes that is.
Huh?
Remote control. The new ones. They gave motherboards anyway.
