America's Wild Horse Program Is Broken. Bureaucracy Keeps It That Way.

BLM’s recent roundup in Nevada’s Callaghan Complex illustrates this entrenched cycle.

Low-flying helicopters gathered over 2,000 wild horses from 1.1 million acres in July, causing eleven deaths, including several foals. Surviving horses face indefinite holding, adoption, or sale channels that carry risk of slaughter. Without on-range fertility management, herd populations will quickly recover, triggering another gather in just a few short years.

The Callaghan roundup alone cost taxpayers $765,000, paid to a private contractor BLM has relied on since 1975. The federal government maintains over $100 million in open contracts with this single company – a relationship that incentivizes roundups by design.

If the fiscal and moral advantages of fertility control are so glaring, why does BLM continue relying on roundups? The crisis originates from systemic administrative failure.

We see them all the time between Reno and Carson City by Washoe Lake. There is a plan to build a 26 mile section of fence on the east side of the lake to keep them away . This will force them to move to other areas and likely crossing high traffic roads. Hitting one is not a good thing for either party. Lots of them in east Reno and the Virginia City range. We've been to a holding area north of Reno. Not nice.

Read this article:

And then tell me: Are there too many horses? Or are the number of horses declining at an alarming rate?

Whatever the answer, it sure sounds like Trump’s fault!

Just cheaper and faster to kill the excessive population.

They are an invasive species anyway.

If they already “gathered over 2,000 wild horses” then
why not sell them for dog food or feed them to the homeless?

Had about a dozen walk through my yard this morning.

My horses freak out and don’t like them.

Remove all ‘feral’ horses and replace them with Prezwalski true wild horses.

Australia found the cost of culling an exotic horse herd to be about $85-$416 per horse. They used helicopters and rifles.

Not really. The west is perfect horse country. Before the last ice age the west was covered in many different ungulates; horses included.

They are an invasive species anyway.

Exactly, Back in the '70s a wildlife biology professor, Pierre Pulling at Idaho State University declared the proper solution to the "Wild Horse Problem," i.e. overpopulation of invasive horses destroying range land for legitimate native species, was a 30-06.

On a side note, BLM gives the good ones to the BOP. The prisoners break and train them and they go out for auction.

The US Border Patrol gets the top first picks at no cost.

THEY WERE HERE FIRST

THEY KEEP THE FLAMMABLE GRASSES & BUSHED AT A CONTROLLABLE LEVEL.

CHEAP BRUSH CONTROL

IF THAT BRUSH CONTROL FAILS-—WILDFIRES WILL TAKE OVER.

RENO AREA ALREADY HAD MASSIVE WILDFIRES THIS SUMMER.

MILLIONS OF $$$$$$$$$ IN DESTROYED PROPERTY

We see wild horses a lot around here too, as some 600 head escaped into the wild near here back in 1862. We see most of them a few miles north of here around Mongomery Pass area on Hwy 6 on the Calif/Nevada border.

Same thing we are doing with wild pigs.

We build traps for them. Traps that are designed to allow the piglets to escape.

So they can grow up to make more wild pigs.

If this makes no sense, congratulations. You have passed the Not Totally Stupid test.

Oh please do not get me started. It is the Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1976. As a Mohave County Supervisor and then a State Senator i will tell you that the animal rights activists control everything and our week-kneed legislators do not want to piss them off although everything says that the horses and the burros are dying because of it. When John McCain was alive I went to a meeting in DC about it and although BLM really wanted nothing to do with it, they Republicans caved to the activists. It is shocking how much money is spent on these craatures. I could write a book.

If people knew how much we spend not to kill these animals they would be in shock. My expertise is the wild burros as my County is ground zero. They are not native to our area and the damage they do is not only costly but has long term effects.
