The 2026 midterms aren’t even over yet, and Vice President JD Vance has already dropped a bomb into the 2028 presidential election cycle: he might not run.
Vance told the audience at a Michigan town hall that he had not yet made a decision about whether or not he would seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2028 — and said it was certainly a possibility that he would sit the election out.
Host Tony Dokoupil started the ball rolling by jumping on a comment Vance had made earlier in the evening — namely that he might be “out of a job” in a couple of years.
“The structure of the sentence suggests that you’d be running for a continued job,” he said.
“Not necessarily,” Vance laughed.
“No?” Dokoupil asked. “So there’s a chance — okay, let’s go right there: Is there a chance that you don’t run for president in 2028?”
“Of course there’s a chance!” Vance’s reaction was immediate. “Yeah, man, we’ve got four little kids, my wife has never loved politics. She loves public service. I think you know you can do a lot of good in this job, and I’ve tried to do as much good as possible.”
“I really — people ask me this question all the time. I think they assume that because I’m a politician, ‘Of course he’s going to run for president in 2028,'” he continued adding that, as a rule, he tended to procrastinate on major life decisions and only make up his mind at the last minute.
“My wife will tell you this: I’m a procrastinator. I hate ‘thinking about it,'” he added. “And what will happen is that first of all, after all of these fine people elect Mike Rogers United States Senator for the state of Michigan, what’s going to happen is, they don’t have to think about it. And I actually will have to make a decision.”
Throwing up his hands, Vance shook his head and concluded, “But you know, anything could happen, man.”
President Donald Trump has refrained from naming a chosen successor, making it clear that he has confidence in a number of members of his own cabinet should any of them decide to run for the 2028 nomination. He has said specifically that he thought Vance would do a great job, and has also voiced support for Secretary of State Marco Rubio

Like JD is going to make the career of some guy named Tony Dokoupil with a major story right before the 2026 midterms.
He might .. he might not ... he might ... he might not ...

Vance should hold off as long as possible. If he announces then the assassination attempts begin.
It’s way too early to ride that escalator down to make an announcement. The collectivists already have their 105 tubes loaded and ready to destroy any contender.
If the GOP loses control next week, he would stand zero chance of being elected. Who needs to spend two years away from his kids to run for an office he won’t win?
Rubio seems to be garnering more support from independents and hispanics. I am sure there are 30 governors and senators who see themselves as “presidential.”
It’s going to be a crowded run. And they will run away from Trump. Vance simply cannot do that.
If the GOP wins next week…then he probably has a path.
a great big nothing burger ...
I’d be just as happy with Rubio. He has really impressed me as SecState.
Vance is still young, only 42. If he won in 2028 he would be the third youngest President when inaugurated. With 4 young children it might be better for the family to wait until later. A Republican not as closely connected to Trump might have a better chance of winning in 2028.
You gotta have a fire in your gut. I don’t think JD has that.
That is a definitely concern.
IMHO, while JDV is a credible and good choice for 2028, he’s a close #3 behind Rubio and Desantis.
ALL people running say this exactly because of the way campaign finance rules work.
They have the freedom to do nearly anything as long as they are not officially running or have announced they are.
Vance as a candidate is not tied to any Trump policy. He could be as different a president from Trump as HW Bush was from Reagan.
He’s waiting for approval from Tuq’r bin Qarl.
Please sit it out JD.
Vance is in charge of fighting Corruption, waste FRAUD Abuse.
This is the #1 issue with many voters. If he does well in that and grabs headlines then he will be the leading contender. Otherwise he will just be one of many.
Rubio is doing a good job as Sec of State. But it the kind of position to be a statesman, not a politician. Outside of Brazil, Latin America is a big success for Rubio. That matters with a big chunk of US voters.
