Trump Says He Directed Justice Department to Sue Alaska Over Senate Race

Lawsuit asks judge to delay finalization of vote if tossup election could have been swung by having two candidates named Dan Sullivan on the ballot

WASHINGTON—President Trump said he asked the Justice Department to sue Alaska to prevent certification of the state’s Senate results if the Republican candidate loses, an extraordinary move by his administration to intervene legally in the 2026 midterm elections.

The Justice Department filed the lawsuit in federal court in Alaska, citing the potential for voter confusion because the ballot there includes retiree Dan J. Sullivan Jr. in addition to the Republican incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan, who is in an extremely close race with Democratic challenger Mary Peltola.

Trump said in a social-media post earlier this week that his administration was examining “powerful legal options” to get Dan J. Sullivan off the ballot, saying he was “very concerned” that it could be “totally confusing.” Asked about the lawsuit on Friday, Trump told reporters: “I’m the one that said do it.”

The lawsuit asks the court to delay the finalization of the Alaska contest if the votes cast for Dan J. Sullivan Jr. are sufficient to potentially change the outcome.

The lawsuit alleges that “Daniel J. Sullivan decided to run for Senator in 2026 as a Republican with the intention of misleading supporters of Senator Sullivan into voting for him,” and that “the sole purpose of his candidacy is to benefit the Peltola campaign.”

U.S. Sen. Dan S. Sullivan has held his office since 2015. Alaska is among at least 10 battleground states this year that could determine control of the Senate.

The Justice Department argued that if Alaska certifies any electoral results “tainted” by the similarly-named challenger’s inclusion on the ballot, the state and its officers will have failed in their obligation to protect the integrity of the...

He should be doing this in EVERY state. I’m shocked that this midterm election is even taking place.

You want elections to not happen? What is your solution? Just hand pick who represents the people?

Don’t validate anything until recounts have GOP wins.

I want FAIR elections to happen. If there’s any evidence of a steal, then they shouldn’t take place until that’s sorted out.

Unless Congress has passed a law which supersedes Alaska law on how elections for Senator are conducted, there is no Federal authority in this matter.

Congress has refused to pass the SAVE act. It is certain the next Congress will not pass it, or anything like it.

Cutting through the wordage:

“We think you Alaska voters are too stupid to know the difference between the two candidates”.

If there’s evidence of anything prosecute. So far that isn’t happening. Suspending democracy until they do is not a solution.

Are both names on the ballot listed with a middle initial? If so voter education and awareness is the key to picking the right GOP candidate.

That being said, that level of awareness is a lot to ask of too many voters these days... A pretty good reason to have literacy testing as a part of voter registration.
