No Canada-U.S. trade deal expected before American midterm elections: sources

The Canada-U.S. trade war is poised to grind on for the foreseeable future, as sources tell CBC News hope of a deal before the American midterm elections has completely faded.

According to three sources with knowledge of the situation, Canadian government officials have been informing industry groups over the past few weeks that there is no expectation a deal can be reached before the Nov. 3 vote.

There is no substantial engagement at this time, according to the sources, even though officials from both countries remain in contact.

The sources have also been told that the White House is fully immersed in the election campaign. U.S. President Donald Trump is spending much of his time on the road holding rallies, as polls suggest his Republican Party is facing an uphill battle to maintain control of the House and possibly even the Senate.

Trump already tore up the NAFTA treaty, as well as the replacement agreement HE negotiated with Canada and Mexico. If I were either of them, it would make far more sense to see what happens in the midterms, and whether or not the American voters draw Trump’s teeth from him.

Name call all you want but the fact is Trump is looking to back out of a deal he negotiated. And no, I don't want the Democrats to win but I will criticize Trump as I see fit. It's my inalienable right to do so. A real conservative would understand that.

There is a Euro trash full court press and CanaDuh has joined up. They are no double financing the DNC. There is no need to play their games when they think Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck up Schumer will be running things. Unicorn farts galore.

Since Carney and the Liberals walked away from an agreed upon deal to hurt Trump and Republican chances in the mid-terms, Trump should not give them any deal until next year, after the 50% tariffs kick in and what’s left of the Canadian auto industry pulls up stakes and moves back to America.

Eff them.

The president didn’t back out of a deal.

He exercised a clause in a deal that both the US and Canada signed.

Canada’s Deep State thought the clause would never be exercised.

Canada’s Deep State was very mistaken.

That’s on Canada’s Deep State.

Canada was not in violation of the USMCA when Trump decided not to renew the agreement he originally negotiated. There was disagreement over dairy quotas (which to be sure Canada violated) but they were resolved in 2023.
