The owner of two dogs that mauled a man in a Brisbane park on Friday evening has spoken out in their defence, claiming her dogs are not dangerous.
A 37-year-old man was mauled by two pit bulls in Seventh Brigade Park on Kittyhawk Drive in Chermside at around 6pm on Friday.
He was found by paramedics with life-threatening injuries to his arms, leg and face while the dogs fled the scene after police fired at them, which resulted in a police search involving aerial support.
One dog was located shortly after the search begun but one remained at large overnight before being found sleeping in the backyard of a residential address on Saturday morning.
The dogs’ owner Layla Evans spoke to 9News on Saturday afternoon, claiming her dogs Louis and Ruby are protective of her and her partner, but not aggressive.
“They’ll bark if you proceed to come in, (if) they feel like harm’s gonna be done to me or my partner then they will proceed to protect, but, apart from that, they’re really good dogs,” Evans said.
She said she lives in a tent with the dogs and had left them there while she went out for dinner with a friend, but somehow the pets escaped.
“The police told me, finally, that apparently they had got through the roof of the tent and then tore a hole, and that’s how that big hole ended up there,” Evans told 9News.
“And from there had proceeded to protect the campsite, I guess.
“My mother rung me to say she was with the police … and I had to come down, had to come down and try to find my dog.
“I walked all over town, I walked over the park, couldn’t find them anywhere.”
Witnesses reported hearing a woman yelling a dog’s name in a nearby street just after the attack, according to the Courier Mail.
Evans said she’s “shattered” by the event.
“Shattered, I’m shattered to bits.”
At the conclusion of the interview while 9News cameras were still present, police swooped in and arrested Evans in a dramatic escalation of events.
She was seen being dragged away in handcuffs before being taken in to custody but not charged
On Sunday, a police spokesperson confirmed the arrest was for an unrelated matter.
The same spokesperson also said senior officers had reviewed the discharge of firearms when responding to the dog attack in Seventh Brigade Park.
“Attending officers were confronted with an immediate and serious safety risk and, after initial attempts to subdue the animals were unsuccessful, were required to discharge their service firearms in response to the risk posed to members of the community and others at the scene,” the spokesperson said.
“As with all police use of force incidents, the matter has been recorded and reviewed by senior officers in accordance with Queensland Police Service policy and procedures.”
A spokesperson for Brisbane City Council said both dogs were registered at the same address and had never previously been declared dangerous.
“Both dogs involved are now in council possession and a decision on their future will be made as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim of last night’s horrific dog attack.”
In a statement, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the council was taking the matter “extremely seriously”.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their neighbourhood and this horrific incident is a devastating reminder of why dog owners must take responsibility for keeping their pets safely secured,” he said.
The condition of the man attacked by the dogs has improved from critical to stable as he remains in hospital to recover

Lives in a tent? Huh?
Their owners (who are in deep denial) are the more serious problem. Her dogs viciously maul someone and she still claims they aren’t aggressive.
The owners like this woman are just as dangerous as the dogs are, they deny the problem right in front of their face.
Pitbulls escaping from a tent, there have been theories that it could be possible, I guess this confirms it.
the victim was a jogger. He was running through 7th Brigade Park in Chermside on Friday evening when he was attacked by two dogs.
He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for urgent care. He will be unable to work for a long time
This seems akin to leaving a loaded gun around for the kids to play with
She lives in a tent with two beasts and is completely baffled as to what happened.
“Somehow they tore a hole in the roof and got out!”
Did they really? Oh, I can’t believe that!!
She can’t take care of herself, let alone two dangerous dogs.
That dog ought to be shot!
And the pitbull euthanized too.
Australia has turned into a craphole, hasn’t it?
Imagine a gun owner giving the rationalization, “the gun never shot anyone before, its a good gun”
Spot on great point
Pit bull people are delusional. Period.
When dogs hurt people, any dog, the owners should go to jail. Period.
He should thank his luck stars that he is still alive.
Last summer I dropped by the county pound hoping to get another dog. There was not one normal dog in the whole pound. They were all pit bulls, about 30 or so. Might as well euthanize them all. No normal person would have one.
Obviously, it was a PRACEful mauling-—

Same thing the owner of the pit bull that ran out of his house to maul me said as blood poured down my leg.
I hope that it was some nice fusion restaurant with an ethnic flair, but not too pricey. But couldn't she have taken her dogs with her?! Or hired a dogsitter?!
“The police told me, finally, that apparently they had got through the roof of the tent and then tore a hole, and that’s how that big hole ended up there,” Evans told 9News.
Will Homeowner's Insurance cover the damages, I wonder?
"And from there had proceeded to protect the campsite, I guess."
Was that one of those campsites with electrical hook-ups, water, and sanitation fixtures, I wonder?
“I walked all over town, I walked over the park, couldn’t find them anywhere.”
Why didn't she just follow the trail of blood?
Witnesses reported hearing a woman yelling a dog’s name in a nearby street just after the attack, according to the Courier Mail.
"Fang! Where are yo-oou? Come back, Little Killer!"
Evans said she’s “shattered” by the event. “Shattered, I’m shattered to bits.”
So she's suffered enough?
She was seen being dragged away in handcuffs before being taken in to custody but not charged. On Sunday, a police spokesperson confirmed the arrest was for an unrelated matter.
Maybe her tent didn't comply with HOA rules?
A spokesperson for Brisbane City Council said both dogs were registered at the same address
"Tent #121, right next to the statue of Captain James Cook, and behind the dumpster?!"
[...] and had never previously been declared dangerous.
Did someone forget to file the paperwork declaring them dangerous?!
“Both dogs involved are now in council possession and a decision on their future will be made as soon as possible,” the spokesperson said.
So, no bail-free release?
“Everyone deserves to feel safe in their neighbourhood and this horrific incident is a devastating reminder of why dog owners - including vagrants and vagabonds - must take responsibility for keeping their pets safely secured,” he said.
Regards,
Your dogs just mauled someone and you’re trying to tell us they’re “not” aggressive? You’re lucky you’re in Australia. I’m always armed. If a couple of pitbulls came up and did anything I deemed aggressive toward me OR my dogs, I’ll pull out my gun and light them up like Christmas trees.
The thing is - beyond outrage, this breed is just plain dangerous.
They were bred to have a hairline trigger, to lock their jaws and never let go and to go into a blind rage ignoring pain to themselves.
Just as Border collies WILL herd - its instinctive - pitbulls tend to snap.
Why do we not just ban this breed completely?
i would much rather walk my dogs carefree than not - the constant lookout is an unwanted stress
