Protesters demand Klitschko quit after Kyiv left unprepared for another winter at war

Protesters have demanded that Vitali Klitschko resign as mayor of Kyiv after failing to prepare for the winter.

Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets with placards, chanting "Kyiv without Klitschko" before congregating outside the city council building.

Discontent has been bubbling since Russia increased its attacks on the capital, leaving many citizens scared for what will be the fifth winter since Vladimir Putin's invasion.

One placard read: "It's too late for Klitschko to get busy now, time to say goodbye." Others said "Where are the shelters?" and "Your task is to make Kyiv safe, green and historic, not deserted".

Some signs read "leave Kyiv", mocking the former boxing champion's recent advice to residents to consider relocating from the city before winter.

Protesters are blaming the city's struggle to maintain reliable access to basic utilities on the Klitschko administration's failure to prepare.

The ongoing Russian strikes have left citizens in Kyiv facing almost-daily power cuts, water shortages and a near-failing sewage system.

The city lacks safety infrastructure, its air raid shelters are crumbling and Russia has stepped up its attacks on the bridges over the Dnipro River.

Mr Klitschko told reporters on Sept 11 that about 50 mobile shelters had been purchased and that the first batch would be installed "within a month", but that number has diminished and that time scale stretched.

The first and so far only public mobile shelter arrived on Oct 15.

Thanks for pointing out that Ukrainians can and do demonstrate on the issues they care about vs the Russians, and that there are no demonstrations for holding elections during the war.
