California woman who registered dog to vote gets unusual penalty

A Southern California woman who illegally registered her dog to vote and cast ballots in two elections has had her criminal case dismissed after pleading guilty and paying for anti-voter fraud billboards featuring her own pet, prosecutors announced Thursday.

Laura Lee Yourex, 64, of Costa Mesa, was initially charged with five felonies after authorities discovered she had registered her dog, Maya Jean Yourex, to vote and submitted mail-in ballots in the animal’s name during California’s 2021 gubernatorial recall election and the 2022 primary election.

According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, the dog’s vote was successfully counted in the 2021 recall election, while the ballot submitted in 2022 was rejected.

As part of a plea agreement, Yourex was required to pay $1,500 for four billboards along the 55 and 22 freeways in Orange County, warning residents about voter fraud.

The billboards feature a photograph of Maya Jean wearing an “I voted” sticker and posing with a ballot addressed to her.

The signs carry the message, “Don’t be a dog,” followed by a warning that voter fraud is a crime and that anyone who cannot legally vote should not do so.

They will remain posted through the Nov. 3 midterm election, prosecutors said.

The investigation began after the Orange County Registrar of Voters contacted the District Attorney’s Office on Oct. 28, 2024, about a woman who had reported registering her dog to vote and submitting ballots in its name.

Investigators also uncovered social media posts in which Yourex appeared to document the fraudulent registration.

In January 2022, she posted a photograph of Maya Jean wearing an “I voted” sticker alongside her ballot, according to prosecutors.

The court knows that it was a political statement and protest.

I tend to suspect that you are correct. I noticed from what you posted, no political party affiliation was mentioned. Does the article actually state that information?

Not only did she register the dog - the dog continued to vote after she (the dog) had died. Deeply troubling. I mean, ok having your dog vote is one thing. But having your dead dog vote? How would anyone know which candidate the dog actually supported?

I think the fact that this woman was trying to do something positive and has always been honest about what happened, has resulted in a rather lighthearted penalty.

This is the sort if thing that happens when authorities must deliver a penalty on someone they actually like, maybe even respect.

Now, if she had been screaming, fussing and cursing everybody for her own mistake, she would have gotten the book thrown at her. Attitude matters.

**I was hoping to see a pic of that Billboard.

Maybe they should have put the woman’s picture on the billboard, not the dog’s. I’ll bet the dog didn’t even know he was voting.

If her dead dog was suspected of voting for Republicans she would die in prison.

Or at least, Mayor.
