The University of New Mexico hasn’t said whether its recently abandoned plan to purchase one of northern New Mexico’s key rural hospitals was tied to a proposed reproductive healthcare center, following the expiration of a preliminary agreement last month.
Alta Vista Regional Hospital, a 25-bed critical access hospital in Las Vegas, issued a news release Oct. 2 stating that “a preliminary letter of intent related to a potential transaction with the University of New Mexico” had expired Sept. 1.
The letter referred to the university’s proposed “acquisition” of the hospital, according to university spokesperson Christopher Ramirez, who said the deal would have leveraged legislative healthcare appropriations lawmakers earmarked over the last two years.
Word of the tentative purchase proposal spread across conservative social media channels this fall, including speculation that the deal would have entailed abortion services.
Asked to confirm or deny those rumors, Ramirez didn’t answer directly.
Although House Bill 450 does not explicitly mention abortion services, the Governor's Office previously confirmed that the proposed reproductive healthcare center would offer them. Whether UNM intended to provide those services at Alta Vista remains unclear.
Four years out from the U.S. Supreme Court’s controversial ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, New Mexico has become an outlier in abortion access among its conservative neighboring states.
The state has 14 brick-and-mortar abortion clinics, according to Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit focusing on sexual and reproductive healthcare that lists the state among the most “protective” of abortion rights. Most of those clinics are located in Albuquerque and Las Cruces. Las Vegas and its surroundings in the northeastern corner of the state have none.
Alta Vista is the only general acute-care hospital in San Miguel County, serving Las Vegas and surrounding rural communities where residents often travel considerable distances for specialized medical care.
