Cruz alleged that El-Sayed's purported associations could jeopardize American intelligence operations and military personnel overseas.
He emphasized that elected members of Congress don't undergo the traditional executive-branch security clearance process, although access to particular classified information is subject to congressional rules and need-to-know restrictions.
Cruz devoted much of the podcast to challenging El-Sayed's recent denial of family connections to the Muslim Brotherhood during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press."
Asked by moderator Kristen Welker whether he or his family had ties to the organization, El-Sayed said, "No."
Cruz disputed that denial, citing social media posts by El-Sayed's half-sister Eman Abdelhadi.
In a 2012 post, which Cruz read aloud, she wrote, "My family has long been MB," referring to the Muslim Brotherhood.
He also cited El-Sayed's 2011 Huffington Post commentary about Egypt's political uprising, in which El-Sayed argued that a government led by the Muslim Brotherhood would look "nothing like Iran."
Cruz portrayed the commentary as evidence of longstanding sympathy for the Islamist movement, which briefly governed Egypt under former President Mohamed Morsi.
Although these statements and alleged family associations do not establish that El-Sayed belongs to the Muslim Brotherhood or poses a national security threat, Cruz also scrutinized El-Sayed's campaign financing,
Cruz alleged that El-Sayed's father-in-law, Tayeb Jukaku, contributed $300,000 to a super PAC supporting his candidacy.
The senator mentioned Jukaku's involvement with the Islamic Society of North America, which federal prosecutors previously named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism-financing case.
That designation was not a criminal conviction, and the allegations do not establish wrongdoing by El-Sayed.
El-Sayed's positions on Israel have separately generated pushback.
He has characterized Israel's military campaign in Gaza as genocide, advocated ending American military assistance to Israel, and declined to directly affirm Israel's right to exist when questioned by CNN.

Blue states pose a national security risk. It appears MI will elect the pos.
Cruz won’t do anything about Thune not doing anything, so why should we care about anything he says?
Well duh. What was your 1st clue Ted?
Only delusional Democrats who hate America can look at a duck, sees that it walks like a duck, hear it quack and conclude they are looking at an eagle.
It is incredibly depressing and sobering that such a man has the support of at least 40% of the voters in this storied state in the center of America’s heartland.
Can only conclude that there soon will be blood.
The only reason a country would allow Muslims to enter would be because politicians want terrorists running around
They’re looking NOT an eagle, but a Vulture!
Campaigning? He should be arrested.
He’s a clear and not-so-present danger. With all the leftists and muslim voters in Michigan it might as well be the O.J. jury. Gotta nip it in the bud. If we keep the senate the real work starts. Immigration/deportations. Then my other favorite topic, restoring D.C.’s original borders, thereby cutting out a blue chunk of Virginia. Trump will have 2 years to get it done.
If Ted Cruz cannot condemn Demonicrats like El-Sayed as traitors to the United States, then one wonders whose side he is on.
Grow a pair, Ted.
If: Muslim
Then: National Security Risk.
Period.
Now, let’s think of a party that would elect such untrustable, lying, and anti-US vermin to be a congress-critter.
Nah, none of our political parties are that corrupt. /s
Sen Cruz cited El-Sayed’s 2011 Huffington Post commentary about Egypt’s political uprising as evidence of longstanding sympathy for the M/B movement, which briefly governed Egypt under ousted President Mohamed Morsi.
On July 3, 2013, the day the Egyptian military removed Morsi, Abdul’s sister
wrote that she had family jailed for being part of the Muslim Brotherhood
Reality Check
Current Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi (who succeeded Morsi) has led
a strict, state-directed campaign to suppress and dismantle the M/B organization.
al Sisi has plenty of dirt on the Abdul family’s
involvement in the M/B. He should be contacted pronto.
This has always been a thorn in the side of the intelligence community. Congress people are considered inherently trustworthy to view classified information by virtue of being elected and taking a secrecy oath each term. (We already know they tell lies and are not punished for them)
Access to specific levels of classified data (such as sensitive compartmented information) often depends on a member’s specific committee assignments (like the Armed Services or Intelligence committees), though they still do not undergo a formal clearance investigation either.
This two sided sword opens up the opportunity for people not proven into the system to view or misuse information putting lives at risk.
As a member of the intelligence community in my military days I would like to see anyone that expects access to top secret to compartmental investigated for a classified security clearance. Many people working for the DOW have been investigated as their work crosses over into highly classified material. Just because someone trusts you with their paycheck doesn’t mean they can trust you to do what is a public trust. Too much and many at stake.
