Florida polls show Republicans lead Democrats in governor and Senate races, but contests remain close
South Florida Sun Sentinel ^ | October 10, 2026 | Anthony Man

A quartet of public opinion polls in recent days show Republican Byron Donalds with a continuing, albeit narrow, lead over Democrat David Jolly in the race for Florida governor.

In the U.S. Senate race, Republican Ashley Moody enjoys a larger advantage in her contest with Democrat Angie Nixon.

The four polls, all taken within the last two weeks and released in the past week, have different sponsors and methodologies. Taken together they’re positive for Republican candidates but not overwhelmingly so.

Donalds and Moody are both ahead, but neither has hit 50% in averages of the surveys.

The four-poll average in the governor’s race is 48.0%-43.3%, a Republican advantage of 4.7 percentage points in the Donalds-Jolly race.

The Senate race average is 49.5% for Moody and 42.8% for Nixon, an advantage of 6.7 points for the Republican.

“The trendline tends to suggest that this is going to be a tighter election than it has been in the last couple of cycles,” said Kevin Wagner, a political scientist at Florida Atlantic University.

That’s a change. “I think there was a perception that Democrats were just not going to be competitive in Florida going forward, and the numbers suggest that while they’re not the favorites to win, that we have real contests for November.”

Doesn’t help that Donalds is black. Perhaps Florida is red enough now but other states have had a problem with GOP blacks running statewide. It’s been proven too many times.

-Sorry.

Probably be best if you steered clear of the sunshine state at all costs...doesn’t sound like it’s your cup of tea.

Well I live in Florida now and I have the same concern. We moved here a year ago from Kentucky. Back in Ky, we ran Daniel Cameron for Gov. He was the former AG, a really good guy who ran a decent campaign. And still, he lost to the COVID tyrant, Andy Beshear. Why? Mostly because significant blocks of Republicans in far east Ky didn’t show up.

The Florida panhandle didn’t vote for Donald’s in the primary. I suspect many will not vote for him in the general. Hopefully, his margins in the rest of the state will be large enough to compensate. But this race will be FAR closer than it should be. DeSantis would win by 30!

There have been others. Think Herman Cain running for senate in ‘04 and TW Shannon in Oklahoma doing the same. We settled for milk toast. Both states were solid red.

V_Twin-I’m worried about the effect it will have on the Georgia.-Alabama game.

I think Donalds will win, only because DeSantis has been so successful in solidifying Florida as a Republican stronghold. The question will be if Donalds can maintain what DeSantis has accomplished.

And as you mentioned, I'm also concerned here. Our track record with black candidates in statewide races for any position greater than Lieutenant Governor has been pretty dismal. Yet time and time again, we push forward in doing so.

At any rate, I'm far more confident we'll keep Florida than Ohio, which is a damn shame. We should've easily kept them both.

I hope so. The setup is not exactly the same.
Byron has way more money and better name recognition.

But Ky, as a whole, was more Rep than Fla.

“Doesn't help that Donalds is black.”

If that were said 50 years ago I would say it was partially true; may even 30 years ago.

I know some very conservative people in Florida. I can't remember the last time I heard a white conservative say they would not vote for a black candidate because of race. Even in private conversations I do not hear whites say they will vote against someone because of race.

President Obama's wife claimed people opposed her husband because of racism. In my opinion, voters opposed her husband because of his politics and world views.

I think Donalds will do fine in north Florida and throughout the Gunshine State.

Herman Cain ran 22 years ago and TW Shannon was denied the Oklahoma senate nomination in ‘14.

True but it doesn’t buy us anything. A timely reference to bigfoot or her her being a man just may be more appropriate. What I’m saying is being gentlemanly when she says those things buys us nothing. W turned the other cheek way too often.

The republicans brought Herman Cain in in 2004 after Jim Ryan, who was ahead of Obama dropped out when Obama got the LA Times to unseal his sealed divorce records from actress Jeri Ryan. Cain never had a chance.

Donalds WON the primary against other Republicans who were white. That’s a factor.

Trump backed DeSantis years ago over the state Republican party’s choice - and DeSantis won. He’s been great for Florida, but we have term limits and he can’t run again.

This time Trump chose Donalds - and MAGA voted him as our champion against Jolly. Jolly’s not popular among parts of the democrat base - so I think we’ve got it.

It wasn’t Herman Cain was it? It was that grifter Alan Keys.
Herman was a great guy.

I count Herman and Diamond from Diamond and Silk to be among the worst losses we suffered from Covid 19. Miss them both.

It could’ve been Mike Ditka, but he declined. Obama would’ve disappeared after getting trounced.

Not to mention that he's a lying sack of elephant dung.
