OAKLAND — To mark the 60th anniversary of when two Merritt College students, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, launched the Black Panther Party, party veterans, scholars and activists from around the country will gather for what’s been called a historic four-day conference and gala in downtown Oakland, Oct. 15-18.

• Alex Rackley: A Black Panther Party member who was tortured and murdered in May 1969 by fellow party members (including Warren Kimbro, George Sams Jr., and Lonnie McLucas) who suspected him of being an FBI informant.
• John Frey: An Oakland police officer shot and killed during a traffic stop in October 1967; Black Panther co-founder Huey P. Newton was convicted of voluntary manslaughter (the conviction was later overturned).
• John Huggins and Alprentice "Bunchie Carter": Leaders of the Southern California chapter of the Black Panther Party who were killed on January 17, 1969, on the UCLA campus during a violent power struggle with the rival organization US Organization (led by members George and Larry Stiner).
• Clinton Robert Smith Jr.: A Black Panther member killed in Algeria in 1973 by fellow Panther Eldridge Cleaver during internal factional disputes.
• Betty Van Patter: A bookkeeper and former aide to the Black Panther Party whose bruised and battered body was found in San Francisco Bay in December 1974; her murder was widely attributed by investigators to the party, though no one was ever charged.
Jean Seberg, a fantastic actress, destroyed her life by covering for the Black Panthers.
From “Paint your Wagon” fame.
Butt butt, butt......the movement for equality and stuff. Remember kids, special treatment is NOT equal treatment. IIRC, when NM was less liberal in the early 1960’s, Jesse Jackson was sent on his way without causing a problem in ABQ. But that was a long time ago when UNM frats still had animal house festivities. 😊👍🇺🇸
Whose “good idea” was this?
Oakland has been a city struggling to get out of the toilet for as long as I can remember. Yet every once in a while it stands on the rim and takes a swan dive.
What’s next. New York naming streets after mob bosses?
They’re renaming 3 blocks of Broadway to “Black Panther Party Boulevard”.
OAKLAND KEEPS SINKING LOWER & LOWER
WELL SAID
THE COST OF SUCH A MOVE IS IMMENSE:
ALL DEEDS MUST BE REWRITTEN.
ALL TAX BILLS & ASSESSMENTS
ALL UTILITY BILLS HAVE NAME CHANGE
ALL BUSINESSES HAVE TO CHANGE ALL THEIR RECORDS
ETC ETC ETC
NONE OF THIS IS CHEAP
Los Angeles says right back at ya and will rename La Cienega Blvd to SLA Blvd in honor of the Symbionese Liberation Army.
This Hot Tub-Time Machine approach to Oakland’s ‘Glory Days’ is not what the city needs. Oakland needs more employment opportunities. In order to do that, the workplace environment needs to become safer and less threatening to employees and commuters.
Flashback: 3/24/2024: The sole N-Out Burger at 8300 Oakport St. permanently closes today, after out of control robberies, shoplifting, burglaries and assaults.”
This In & Out is one I used to visit. They were about one mile away from the Oakland Coliseum, a huge arena, where pro team The Oakland Raiders played football until about 2019.
The area has been in a period of slow deterioration since then.
I had not even thought about the four necessary steps such superficial changes require. I’m betting, those proposing these changes haven’t thought about them either, or consider such concerns far ‘beneath the dignity’ of their social intentions.
Was a member of Judge Harold Haley’s family available for comment ?
Black Panther Party founder Huey P Newton on 17 February 2022. In his memoir, Revolutionary Suicide, he reflects on visiting socialist China in September 1971. Away from the system of institutionalized racism and white supremacy that he had endured all his life in the US, in China he “felt absolutely free for the first time in my life”.
What I experienced in China was the sensation of freedom – as if a great weight had been lifted from my soul and I was able to be myself, without defence or pretence or the need for explanation. I felt absolutely free for the first time in my life – completely free among my fellow human beings. This experience of freedom had a profound effect on me, because it confirmed my belief that an oppressed people can be liberated if their leaders persevere in raising their consciousness and in struggling relentlessly against the oppressor.
Huey P Newton, Revolutionary Suicide (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition, p348)
Just my thought. Will they rename something in honor of Judge Harold Haley, murdered in the Black Panther courthouse escape attempt that killed four people, wounded two more, and made Angela Davis a revolutionary hero?
Of all the execrable creatures who survived the Sixties, I’m most disappointed to learn that Angela Davis is still alive. I suppose she’ll be a featured speaker at this event. Maybe she can shine up and show off her Order of Lenin.
What a shame he didn’t follow his pal Jim Jones down to Jonestown. Then he would have experienced ultimate freedom.
Just a little difference from being a “celebrity” puppet visitor and actually living there. Pretty sure it would have been a different story. He was used by the chicoms and too stoopid to know it.
A disturbed woman I believe she later committed suicide.
I lived and worked for a time in that city.
It was always a tough, blue-collar town with better weather and geography than San Francisco.
It was famous for its world champion sports teams (A’s, Raiders and Warriors).
And, infamous for its less glorious types (Black Panthers, Symbionese Liberation Army, Hell’s Angels, Felix Mitchell, The Draft Board Riots and many more too numerous to mention).
In spite of it all, this truly is a new low by any stretch of the imagination!
