Second Lady Usha Vance narrowly avoided a fall while carrying her nine-week-old son, Alec, as she joined Vice President JD Vance for a campaign trip to Alaska on Monday.
Usha was walking down the steps after getting off the vice president's helicopter at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where the family was preparing to board a flight to Alaska. She was carrying Alec and a large brown backpack when she appeared to lose her footing.
Usha stumbled forward but quickly caught herself, keeping hold of the baby. She then smiled in relief and continued walking. JD Vance followed a few seconds later with the couple's four-year-old daughter, Mirabel.
The moment was captured on video and quickly drew attention online.

It happened pretty fast and she recovered quickly.
Nothing happened. Silly hype.
Used to be someone would offer a hand to a lady descending steps.
I wonder if the airmen in front of her were so fixed on getting through this moment of being in front of the cameras and not wanting to mess up, that they were fixed in place and on automatic trying to remember when to salute and for how long to not look stupid, and that it took a long time for their minds to process that she had slipped? Nervousness making slow reflexes.
Great videos-games on their phones right...
You ever been in the military? Did you notice they were all standing at attention. You do know when standing attention you do not break rank. Even if the person standing next to you faints and falls down. That is what they are trained to do. Not only that but it happened so fast they didn’t even have time to react even if they wanted to.
I lost my footing on a winter sidewalk, I was also carrying my baby who was still in that newborn age. I was sure I was going to slip under the car. The only time in my life I remember quick thinking, I tossed the baby onto a fresh pile of snow. I didn’t get under the car but it was close and he didn’t feel the jolt I got as I hit the sidewalk. It all happened so fast.
JD Vance managed the same stair while holding a significantly larger child and saluting at the same time.
Maybe there’s a good explanation. Seems strange.
I question the wisdom of dragging a 9 week old baby on the campaign trail.
They are not USSS and therefore not expected to intervene to aid a protectee.
As with your response, no excuse, but an explanation.
I haven’t watched the clip, but that’s a good guess.
re: It happened pretty fast and she recovered quickly.
Yes, within about one second she was steady. Also the camera was filming from some distance away which alters the perpective, making the men in front of the stairs appear closer to Usha than they actually were, as can be seen when she takes four steps toward them. The marine guards on the side were at full attention, saluting, with not enough time to react.
But I think they should look at the design of the steps on the folding stairway with this new model of helicopter. They’ve only been using it a short time now.
He says he is a retired Army Officer, so if true he's entitled to his opinion. However, not every military person has served on a formal security detail (especially for the VP of the United States).
You are correct, of course; they were doing their professional duty. Their focus is is supposed to be on protecting the VP; anything else is secondary and can't be allowed to take their attention off that for a second.
He was not wearing heel, was he?

1. If the wife of a conservative Republican shows up in public at all, she is to be automatically vilified.
2. If she has a misstep of any kind, she is to be ridiculed mercilessly until she has a nervous breakdown.

4. If she shows up with makeup, she is to be disparaged for 144 hours or until she shows up without makeup.
5. If her clothing does not satisfy transgender clothing present style, she is to be labeled anti-trans.
6. If she doesn't wear the "correct" color determined by the media for a given day and/or event, she is to be shamed for being out of style. If she shows up half naked at the next event, pardon will be given for 1 week.
7. If she's carrying her own child, she is to be considered disrespecting staff available for that purpose.
8. If she is not carrying her own child, she is to be punished for not doing so and at a dead run across the tarmac.
9. If she moves at a quick pace across the tarmac with a child (who may need to use the bathroom), she is to be lambasted for endangering said child.
10. If she does not apologize to the media for her faults aforementioned plus anything else they can invent, she is not worth to be a leader's wife.
