Trump’s red-dye diesel tax waiver could have limited impact on prices – here’s why

President Trump’s executive order allowing a more widespread use of tax-exempt red-dye diesel is meant to lower the cost burden on Americans – but it may not help prices at the pump much, according to experts.

Long-haul drivers could save a substantial amount of money using the cheaper fuel, potentially passing those savings along to groceries – but there are several roadblocks standing in the way.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, estimated that few truckers – perhaps just one in 100 – will actually be able to take advantage of the tax-exempt fuel because it’s not usually available at gas stations.

“The problem, first of all, is that dyed diesel is a specialty product. Generally it appears in rural areas where there are many farmers, not at gas stations,” De Haan told The Post.

I remember when diesel was much cheaper than gas. It is the high taxes on diesel that is making this issue bad.

I was looking at this topic in detail earlier...

The state tax issue is quirky - I’m in MA, and Healey Stealey won’t comply. Thus, red-dye diesel drivers here get a pass from FED inspectors, however, Stealey will penalize and steal for state MGL (MA general law) violations.

The other quirky thing is, unless extended, the fed tax waiver goes thru 12/31/26. So, don’t expect to fillup on new year’s eve... you could get fined on new year’s day for having a tank of red-dye. So, plan accordingly - buy diesel thru end of the year that you’ll use up this year, and refill new years day.

Sorry but it is true, this is just silly. Nothing but throwing the fools in the public a bone and a bare small one at that.

Actually it is EPA regulations that drove up the price of diesel.

The EPA put strict limits on the amount of Sulfur in diesel increasing the cost of production. It also reduces the lubrication properties of the fuel cutting the life of engines.

Diesel today is more expensive to make...have to take the sulfur out of it.

Does is add capacity? NO.

What it will do is, dramatically increase the price for farmers, and those previously getting the break on tax.

And minutely decrease the price for the majority of diesel users who were paying the tax.

It’s a typically stupid Trump proposal: Gives him a tweet, does nothing.

SUSPEND ALL FEDERAL TAX ON DIESEL! NOW! That would help, a little.

it’s not the color of the diesel fuel, it the amount of diesel fuel that is available. It all comes from the same refinery.

This whole thing is ridiculous, Diesel is relatively easy to refine compared to gasoline, has an extremely long shelf life unlike gas and used to be a lot cheaper than gas as a result. Maybe the Democrats shouldn’t have closed all those refineries??

There are 130 refineries in the US, 128 of which produce diesel fuel.

The dye is blended in post-production, like the brand additives, at terminals far from any refinery.

I think Trump is thinking of using the Red Die Diesel in storage.

“”””And the roads of our nation will continue their decline.””””

Here in Michigan 32.9% of the taxes on fuel is not spent on roads. So maybe attack where the real theft of road repair money is.
