U.K. Says It Has ‘Strong Indications’ Iran Is Linked to Foiled Attack on Air Base

Five men were arrested on suspicion of plotting a terrorist act next to RAF Fairford

U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there were “strong indications” that Iran played a part in a foiled attack on RAF Fairford last weekend, when five masked men were arrested next to the air base which has been used by the U.S. to bomb targets in Iran.

“We will say more in due course, but we can confirm our belief that we believe Iran to have played a part,” Burnham told the BBC.

The comments by Britain’s leader back up earlier assertions by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that a foreign actor was behind the botched attempt. U.S. officials have said they consider Iran to be the most likely culprit.

The incident remains shrouded in mystery. President Trump previously said the men intended to do serious damage to the base, which houses around a dozen heavy U.S. bombers, and that they had been under investigation. But U.K. counterterrorism police released the men on bail shortly after they were arrested and said they found no explosives in the three white vans the men were driving.

A further twist emerged Monday after officials said that police were alerted to the plot in the early hours of Sunday by one of the arrested suspects, who called emergency services to tip them off. That revelation fueled speculation that one of the suspects might have gotten cold feet about the operation.

Of course Iran was behind it. The co-pilot, who attacked the pilot, was reportedly from Oman, and joined the airline ~9 months ago. Oman, just across the Straight of Hormuz from Iran, and with their own radical Islamists.

Initially they claimed the 5 had explosives, and now they deny it. What were they going to use to attack the base? Why were they bailed if part of a terrorist plot? Are they hoping the 5 will contact their terrorist controllers?
