Lord Khan has urged Andy Burnham to start work on rejoining the European Union immediately.
The Labour Mayor of London urged the Prime Minister, who has refused to rule out rejoining the EU after the next general election, to do the "heavy lifting" as soon as possible.
At Labour's annual party conference in Liverpool, Lord Khan told the i paper: "We've got to start the work now… You can't, a week before a general election, pull out of a hat this rabbit of a manifesto and say we're going to rejoin in six weeks' time.
"The heavy lifting, the pitch rolling must be done now, explaining to the country the disbenefits of being outside the European Union and the benefits of being part of this family."
Lord Khan is urging Mr Burnham to move far more quickly to rejoin than Sir Tony Blair, the former prime minister, who last week set out his plan for Britain to rejoin the EU in a decade, subject to conditions.

Dear UK citizens. You reap what you sow, and when you allow people to manipulate you into supporting people who want to destroy your way of life - you have sown destruction of your way of life.
It’s not too late, but it’s getting there. If you don’t fight, and fight hard for it you will lose your freedoms - at least those you have left.
<85 years ago Germany lied to you and then tried to literally destroy you as an independent nation - bombing civilian areas without concern. You, with the US, had to fish France’s butt out of the abyss. Italy was your enemy too for a good part of that time.
Of the current EU nations, Belgium, Hungary, Poland, Greece, Denmark, Estonia, the Netherlands, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, and others were taken over / occupied by Germany during WWII. Again, we and you had to fight to free them.
Now you want to rejoin an EU that is controlled in large measure by Germany, that has no respect for your heritage and sovereignty, and who have been pushing nation members to commit national suicide by bringing in hordes of people who want to conquer - not assimilate?
