The Trump administration is directing more than $174 million in additional funding to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
Education Secretary Linda McMahon announced on Tuesday the one-time investment at the HBCU Summit at the White House, which brought together administration leaders, university presidents, and others.
"For nearly 200 years, HBCUs have been engines of opportunity in communities, advancing critical innovations and uplifting local industries across the nation," McMahon said.
"This new investment will help ensure these vital institutions have the resources they need to continue delivering world-class education and to prepare students for success in a rapidly evolving economy."
The award follows a one-time investment last year, bringing the combined total to more than $612 million in new funding to the schools in fiscal years 2025 and 2026.
Under Secretary of Education Nicholas Kent said the institutions remain central to higher education in the United States.
"HBCUs have helped shape the story of American education, and they will undoubtedly shape the future," Kent said.

The department did not release a national breakdown of individual awards.
Alabama is home to more historically Black colleges and universities, and historically Black community colleges, than any other state.
Among the Alabama schools, Alabama State University received $2,873,624, Alabama A&M University $2,831,147, Lawson State Community College $2,120,333, Tuskegee University $1,767,981, and Talladega College $1,516,171, according to Britt's office.
"Alabama is home to some of the finest HBCUs and HBCCs in the nation, and the standard of excellence they produce makes these investments well-deserved," Britt said.
The administration will also make a one-time award of more than $61 million in additional funding to Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs).
President Donald Trump created the White House Initiative to Promote Excellence and Innovation at Historically Black Colleges and Universities on April 23, 2025.

HBCUs received over $1.34 billion in total federal funding for Fiscal Year 2025. This includes a one-time investment of $495 million announced by the Trump administration in September 2025, which represented a 48.4% increase over the previous fiscal year.

California’s public universities eliminated the SAT requirement and celebrated what followed: more applications, greater demographic diversity, high retention, and record graduation rates. But now University of California faculty are again pushing for standardized testing, with critics of test-blind admissions pointing to undergraduates who arrive without basic academic skills. That’s the conflict I want to examine: what does a credential actually mean if we’re unwilling to objectively measure the competency it’s supposed to represent?
I break down the argument for keeping the University of California test-free and explain why I think it repeatedly confuses access to a credential with academic achievement. The SAT doesn’t teach students math and bringing it back won’t repair California’s K–12 schools. It’s a filter intended to help measure readiness for college. If students are arriving at universities without grade-level skills despite strong high-school transcripts, I think the bigger problem starts long before college admissions—and simply removing the measurement doesn’t solve the underlying failure.

Vote buying among the HBCUs?
In some instances, when the quality is high, DEI does not call all the shots, and no racial group is negatively profiled, I can support some of this, but I thought one of Linda MacMahon’s jobs was to stop funding ALL preferential education period. Maybe I thought wrong.
Her other job, was to bring an end to the Dept. of Education. Apparently, that takes a couple of fiscal years to get done.
if you want to make America stronger... then you’ll want to make it smarter by getting more people into STEM and of a higher quality.
starting with the lowest IQ group we have doesn’t really move the needle.
meanwhile our best groups, white and oriental males, are being left behind due to the ‘diversity score’ bullsh*t, regardless what the SCOTUS says... because NO ONE is enforcing it.
