(FOX40.COM) — A Sacramento truck driver was released from the hospital Friday after becoming the target of a violent crime at a Wyoming rest stop along I-80 last weekend.
FOX40 spoke with Jasjit Singh, a local advocate for the Sikh community who works with the organization Jakara Movement. Singh also serves as a trustee for the Sacramento City Unified School District.
Singh said officials arrested a 44-year-old suspect from San Gabriel for allegedly stabbing the Sikh man 17 times. According to Sweetwater County court documents, he is facing one count of attempted murder.
While Wyoming law enforcement officials have not confirmed whether this is being investigated as a hate crime, Wyoming is one of just a few states that does not have elevated bias-motivated charges, so advocates of the Sikh community on the local and national levels are calling for justice and support in response to this attack.
“Folks need to figure out that there are multiple communities, faiths, cultures, religions, ethnicities that make up the American fabric,” Singh said. “If you have a problem with that, you might be the problem.”
Singh met with the victim to show his support and solidarity. FOX40 asked about the victim’s emotional reaction during the aftermath of the brutal crime.
“He said it’s heavy,” Singh said. “He has been driving for almost four years. He is not even 30, right? [He] has his life ahead of him.”
Singh explained how the unprovoked nature of last weekend’s attack adds to the complexity.
