German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the era of “unconditional” ties between the US and Europe built since World War II are over, at least for now, the latest pronouncement of a breakdown in relations under US President Donald Trump’s presidency.
“This era of unconditional transatlantic friendship is probably over for the foreseeable future,” Merz told party members in Berlin on Sept 17. “On the other side of the Atlantic, we are seeing a change in political attitudes, a change in the assessment of the transatlantic alliance, which we might not have thought possible.”
Merz, giving a stump speech at his conservative party headquarters ahead of the Berlin state election on Sept 20, contrasted the current US relationship to past visits by American presidents to the German capital, citing famous speeches by John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.
His comments came the same day that he spoke on the phone with Trump, where the two “emphasised the special bond between Germans and Americans”, according to a German government spokesman. The pair also discussed US efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, as well as the ongoing trade friction in the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea.
Merz’s speech came as Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed an overture to become an “associate member” of the European Union this week. Trump responded by threatening a new round of tariffs against the 27-member bloc if he deems the new relationship to be harmful to the US.
Trump lauded a shock victory by Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany in a state election earlier in September, an event that has shaken the country’s political establishment and raised calls for Merz to step aside.
Merz has a track record of provoking the Trump administration with his rhetoric. In April, he told a group of school students that US negotiators seeking a way out of the war with Iran were being “humiliated”. The US President responded with an announcement of the withdrawal of some 5,000 troops from the country.

No one cares.
Some folks are just catching up.
US out of NATO already!
America, take care of yourselves and wait.
The socialist con game is coming to an end sooner than later.
Meanwhile, VW is becoming an unsalvageable failed enterprise.
The German companies with American presence will survive if they depart Germany
Siemens, Bayer and maybe even VW are three
As Europe becomes a muslim place, the US and Europe will hopefully have fewer common interests and reasons to have an alliance in the first place.
Under President Trump, the US finally woke up to this and decided to stop being played for a sucker at every turn.
That's what he means.
Don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya...
The USA and Europe have no important common interests at present.
Russia is destitute and a threat to neirther the USA nor Europe.
Trade with the majority of the world’s people that live East of Suez marginalizes American trade with Europe.
Europe has regulated it’s self to the point of being unable to function in a manner that permits global competition
About time.
What if Europe had paid the same percent of GDP that we paid for the alliance, starting in the late 1950s when they had recoverd from WWII.
Then our National Debt today would be......$0.00
Yessiree, Zero.
Indeed, we would have a positive balance.
&0 years of being a sucker, carrying the load of arrogant leeches. Thanks to Eisenhower, Kennedy, LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, and Biden. And of course, Congress and our Elite. For them, running the world has been fun, and it fed their ego.
We should remember what Bismark said, which is still true today. “America is so lucky. To the north and south their neighbors are weak, To the east and west, they are fish.”
We should have the foreign policy of Brazil. Never get involved in far off places. You dont go broke, and you dont get most of the world hating you.
Ok... You need us more than we need you...
Gut! Kein Geld mehr.
Fine. Germany can free up the Houthi mess in the red sea.
Gut! Kein Geld mehr.
That ‘friendship’ was based on Germany and the rest of Europe treating America as a sucker.
I reunited with a German exchange student my family hosted in in 85-86 last summer.
I told him he could be as Green Party as he and his wife wished but no Muslim was coming to Germany to build Mercedes for them and make sure his grandchildren spoke German.
As liberal and stupid as he is politically he had response to that.
Social Security/Medicare/Medicaid makes that impossible.
Social Security/Medicare/Medicaid makes that impossible.
Best of luck Germany. Prost! While the Islamists allow it.
