New Hampshire has emerged as a surprise battleground for control of the Senate ahead of the midterms, complicating Democratic hopes of flipping the chamber.
The nonpartisan election analysis site Cook Political Report changed its rating of the race to succeed retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D) from “Lean Democratic” to “Toss Up.” The shift is a rare positive development for Republicans as evidence mounts that Democrats are positioned for major victories in the midterms, including polls showing a sizable advantage over Republicans.
An August poll from the University of New Hampshire found Republican John E. Sununu leading four-term Rep. Chris Pappas (D) 45 percent to 43 percent. Sununu, the son of former governor John H. Sununu, served in the Senate from 2003 to 2009.
Republicans benefit from having a strong candidate from a famous political family, a popular Republican governor running at the top of the ticket and GOP groups planning to spend tens of millions on advertising, Cook analyst Jessica Taylor wrote.
Democrats are hoping to flip four Republican seats to gain control of the Senate. But this path requires holding other competitive seats under Democratic control, including in Georgia, Michigan and New Hampshire.
Democrats are optimistic about their chances in New Hampshire, which Democrat Kamala Harris won in 2024 and where President Donald Trump is unpopular.

But I was told yesterday that all the polls show a complete Democrat wipeout and that everyone who thinks Republicans have a chance is a moron. So this must be wrong.
It's possible both are true. At the moment, I'm not convinced the GOP can salvage both the House and the Senate.
Fake polls by fake media to help Dems fundraise.
Could be a reverse 2022.
But my gas is high.
Yup.
Only one reason the WP prints this.

In 2022, we ran terrible Candidates who threw away winnable Senate Seats, now it’s the Democrats turn. CANDIDATES MATTER.
I would be very happy to have a left wing republican for senate from New Hampshire.
This is not satire, not intended to be satire or sarcasm. I mean it.
Let’s go Sununu!
(I would be spitting fireballs if he were to be a senator from Texas though.)
Situational awareness, situational awareness.
1) NH is not a “blue state”. The governor and both Houses of the legislature are Republican.
2) The Sununu (King of RINOs) vs Pappas (Mayor Pete wannabe) and Paxton (MAGA) vs Talarico (you know what he is) are very important tests of the “MAGA is a winning strategy” theory.
If Sununu wins and Paxton loses, it will prove two of my favorite points:
1) Trump was elected by Democrats and Independents in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Without them, he would have lost.
2) A pure MAGA candidate can’t win, even in Texas (and I sent money to Christine O’Donnell) - because at least 30% of registered Republicans are RINOs, more in the Northeast, and although they expect MAGA Republicans to vote for THEM, they will usually vote for a Democrat or stay home before they vote for a MAGA Republican.
New Hampshire re-elected Leaking Leahy to term after term. Has anything changed there? All those Mass-holes who moved up the road simply continuing their voting habits in the new state?!
“New Hampshire re-elected Leaking Leahy to term after term.”
That was probably Vermont.
He was from Vermont. If you didn’t know that you’re not worth listening to.
