Amazon has paused operations with cargo carrier 21 Air following the fatal crash of an Amazon-branded freighter at Miami International Airport earlier this month.

"After the tragic incident last weekend, we've spent time supporting the investigation and reviewing some of the surrounding circumstances, and we’ve decided to pause our operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598," Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in a statement to Reuters. "We'll continue working to support the investigation and everyone affected."

The Sept. 6 flight, operated by 21 Air for Amazon Air, overran a runway while landing in Miami after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, striking multiple vehicles on the ground. The crash killed five people and injured five others.

The aircraft was a 32-year-old Boeing 767-300 freighter. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash and said preliminary flight recorder evidence showed the pilots raised concerns about the aircraft's speed during the landing.

Investigators have also said recorded data showed no indication that the aircraft's speed brakes or thrust reversers were deployed before it traveled roughly 1,300 feet beyond the runway.

21 Air said it remains focused on supporting the families and loved ones affected by the crash and cooperating with investigators.

"We are confident in our safety policies, procedures and training," the carrier said in a statement to Reuters.

In an earlier statement, 21 Air CEO Keith Winters said the company was "devastated" by the accident and was cooperating fully with the NTSB, Federal Aviation Administration and local authorities.

The pilot had a foreign accent. Of course he was flying from Puerto Rico. The whole thing seems strange, although I don't know much about flying. I watched a video on it. Copilot was calling out they were too fast. Not clear why the copilot wasn't stronger about it. Plane was giving ground proximity warning. They seemed to have landed going way to fast and not done much to slow down. The video author speculated they were trying to take off again because going too fast to land properly.

Kind of hard to believe someone that incompetent was flying a 767. Can they buy licenses like with commercial drivers licenses? Never heard of anything like this. Amazon needs to be careful what kind of clowns they hire as contractors.

Not clear why the copilot wasn't stronger about it.

This is a common problem that has contributed to a number of aircraft disasters. Season 2 of The Rehearsal explored this topic in great detail and came up with some steps the FAA could take to improve communication between pilot and copilot, but they ignored it because they're dumb.

I have watched several authoritative videos on this, and the entire thing was a Charlie Foxtrot from the get go.

It is astonishing.

The copilot may have considered that if the pilot couldn't land correctly, he might not have been able to go around correctly either. An incompetent pilot going around would only add more risk to everyone on the aircraft and hundreds of others on the ground, and they might end up in the exact same situation anyway - landing with a pilot who couldn't do it correctly.

It was insane how far beyond the go/no-go point they were before they made their decision, and how far down the runway.

They just gobbled up thousands of feet of runway flaring, floating, and holding their mainmast in the air. They sealed their fate very early on.

Captain Steeeve documented 11 different specific times when a Go Around should have taken place.

When they finally did try a Go Around - it was way too late and they knew it, so they once again tried to stop.

5 people died. Several more seriously injured.

Captain Steeeve points out that there were at least TEN (yes, TEN) go-around decision gates where the aircraft was not "stable" (too high, too fast, aircraft not configured to land) and they should have initiated go-around. The Pilot in Command (PIC) ignored all ten.

Part of the problem is "they". These aren't cohesive teams. It was he, the pilot. The copilot wasn't going to change the pilot's thinking.

For decades, most commercial airline pilots were ex-military pilots. They flew for years with others who were trained just like them.

Now, you show up at some bottom-feeding cargo carrier and one or both of the pilots doesn't belong there and the other one has to tolerate their deficiencies.

These airlines are pairing senior pilots with juniors trying to increase the junior pilot's hours up so they can be the senior one. That's not a recipe for success.

We've all been there with a coworker that nothing you say or do will get through. The commercial aviation industry is not selecting top quality pilots due to the severe shortage of available ones.
