I have always done my own fluid changes. My last two oil changes of Castrol Edge High Mileage have increased by over 10% each for just the cost of the oil.
Almost all of the Fully Synthetic oils you see on store shelves is derived from conventional oil.
Many years ago Mobil filed suit against Castrol claiming that they were engaging in deceptive advertising by labeling conventionally derived lubricants as "Full Synthetic". The court found that the term "Fully Synthetic" refers to the oil's performance rather than it's composition or ingredients.

In the USA there is no full real synthetics. Castrol won against Mobil all “full synthetics” in the USA are hydrotreated and visbreaker base oils also known as Group III base oils chemically. This was 1997 no oil in the USA has been a legal synthetic in the EU or Asia since then. Look at German Castrol vs USA price per QT the German see tiff is 70% PAO that’s made from ethanol or Ethane.
There is only one retail oil on the shelf at any big box that’s chemically a group IV PAO base oil. It’s Royal Purple and only the high end not API cert grades. Their API grades are Group III base you can look at the MSDS for this info.
So yeah US “synthetics” track the cost of C20+ alkanes that’s what they are made of.
The only oils in the USA that have more than 20% group IV PAO is euro 0w/40s you simply cannot get that wide of a vis spread with hydrocracked group IIIs you must have PAO or Group V polyesters.

A Toyota with lifetime oil changes sounds like an absolute home run when it comes to a vehicle purchase. As one who “over maintains” his vehicles, I’d still pick my own service schedule, and let them fill in as much as their service agreement allows. With engines being mostly turbocharged low-displacement units these days, and with transmissions being (all mostly) automatic with 6-10 (?) speeds, it seems even more important than in years past.
