Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday criticized President Trump's controversial proposal to pay out $5,000 checks to every U.S. adult if Republicans win the midterms.
"What I would say is, if you are getting surplus revenue, you should cut people's tax and return it to the people," DeSantis said during a press conference in Miami on Thursday.
"What I don't think you want to do is borrow another trillion-and-a-half dollars and then just try to flood that into the economy, because that will lead to more inflation," DeSantis continued. "That will lead to more debt and more inflation."

I would think, of all people, Trump would know what a dividend is.
A dividend is the distribution of profits by a corporation to its shareholders. When a corporation earns a profit or surplus, it is able to pay a portion of the profit as a dividend to shareholders.
You see, it’s only OK when democrats do it.
I love how they (including the media) are EXPOSING arguments againts this that they would gleefully support if it was a democrat doing it.
DeSantis is right. And as for Trump’s claim of “tremendous” economic strength, real per capita GDP growth is below trend so far in his second term.
I doubt he even said anything about it. This is the “HILL” the place to spread nothing but lies and hate. Every day they dump all over the majority of the citizens who duly elected the President. Shun all leftwing garbage medias and think for yourself. Don’t let them lead you and our country over a cliff.

If he really wants attention he should challenge any democrat wannabe POTUS to a debate on any subject before the next election cycle starts up. He’ll have the time and the Newsom/AOC’s out there need the exposure.
He knows what marketing is, and that's all calling this a "dividend" is.
The US is not a company, it's a sovereign.
Calling a check from the Treasury a dividend is like calling a stock purchase a tax.
I’m an avid Trump supporter, but I’m also an Economics professor and this is just a bad idea on many levels. Making such a payment now with a Federal debt of $40 trillion is stupid. Also, while a lot of Federal spending is done just to get re-elected, this makes it obvious that it’s being done to buy votes. Finally, it make Trump appear fearful of the midterms when I don’t think that’s either true or necessary. If the GOP membership is too lazy to get out and vote in November given the slate the Democrats have proffered, we failed ourselves and will get what we deserve.
With the inattention of the GOP base and the seething rage of the democrats to inflict pain, I doubt very much the republicans will be able to hold the majority in the house and maybe the Senate.
I don’t blame Trump for calling his scheme a “dividend” for public relations purposes. But it way better fits the definition of bribe.
Anyway, DeSantis is right. I just wish he’d express his concerns to Trump privately. His remarks must make the Democrats jump for joy.
Oh, well. The GOP is not called the Stupid Party for nothing.
I don’t have a Phd in economics but wouldn’t giving 5K dollars to every U.S. adult bring about one of the classic causes of inflation...too much $$$ competing for the same amount of goods and services?
But he's used up so many chips with me soon I will no longer love the guy.

But he needs to get back on the rails and start dealing with our debt, which means he needs to learn ENTIRELY new material from books, maybe from Bessent, but from SOMEWHERE. Because obviously he has NEVER heard of the concept of debt.

The dividend should be distributed to those who pay taxes.
Period.
Sounds like vote-buying.
Congress is the only one that can seriously address the debt. All Trump can do in that regard is to veto budgets that don’t balance.
The “dividend” money is from tariffs, so he has some flexibility as to what to do with that money.
I’d say put it on the debt. It wouldn’t do much, but it’s sump’n.
Trump’s concept of debt comes from real estate and there it’s known as “leverage”. It works in business because you carry some debt with some reasonable expectation of increase in value.
It doesn’t really apply to sovereigns other than if GDP goes up, but there’s no guarantee that Congress won’t just blow any extra nickel it gets.
If you listened to what Trump really said he said we are bringing in trillions of dollars in economic deals he’s making all over the world as well as all the billions in tariffs so it is a dividend.
