New safety tech risks drivers' own cars wrongly SNITCHING on them

Car manufacturers are facing allegations of racism after a driver safety feature is accused of discriminating against Asians

The issue was thrust into the spotlight after a viral video spread online showing a man of Asian descent getting a notification from the new high-tech safety system that his eyes were closed, a feature intended to detect driver drowsiness.

But as the camera panned from the dashboard of what appeared to be a Lexus, it showed the driver wide awake and focusing on the road as he drove safely at 63mph. And the glitchy systems may become more commonplace, as the HALT Drunk Driving Act passed in 2021.

It requires all new vehicles to meet a certain standard for drunk and impaired driving prevention. Auto companies would be required to have technology that 'passively' detects impaired driving and prevent the vehicle from operating.

Prepare for more accidents as new cars abruptly stop or dart over to the right on the highway.

It shouldn’t be legal for a car to spy on its driver

An older tried and true vehicle before all this tech arrived seems to be the way to go.

I beg there’s $7k of stupid people tax in every car. Things normal people don’t want or need but in place to save morons.

This system.

Airbags. Worthless, and even harmful, if you wear your seatbelt.

Etc.

All garbage.

The only thing my Toyota Corolla Cross does is drops out of cruise and I have to wait a while before cruise control kicks in again.

How does the vehicle’s owner turn these features off?

To be fair, Asians do tend to be poor drivers.

“Auto companies would be required to have technology that ‘passively’ detects impaired driving and prevent the vehicle from operating. “

So you have one for the road, one for the sidewalk, and one for the gutter (which you shouldn’t) and leave before the last kicks in. What happens when the last kicks in? Does the vehicle stop operating in the middle of the road?

“...how fast they accelerate...”

So you’re in trouble if you accelerate on the entry ramp to “zipper in”instead of waiting and entering the freeway at low speed and then accelerating to match the traffic speed?

Toyota has a fairly long history of cruise control malfunction. They used to just accelerate uncontrollably. Merely cutting out does seem a bit safer than their old system.

Best bets for longevity/ parts availability are gonna be Hondas, Toyotas, and older Jeep Wranglers(the ones you can still mail order a complete frame,or a brand new tub, to your door.)

Honda and Toyota tossed their 3.5 V6’s into bloody near everything for 15 years.

Airbags are not worthless, when you realize the entire car is designed around them.

Backup cameras, Adaptive cruse controls, Blind spot sensors, collision avoidance systems, have made drivers lazy, and the damn 17 inch touch screen is a safety hazard. Never understood why touching my phone, which I can have mounted in such a way as to be still eyes on road, is illegal, but the 18 inch screen I need to navigate through 3 menus for defrost is perfectly okay.

Whachoosmokin?

However, I don’t think it should be a law to wear a seatbelt, but at the same time, I think it’s foolish not to wear one.
