US sells Black Hawk helicopters to Argentina
The Telegraph ^ | September 11, 2026 | Connor Stringer

The United States will sell Black Hawk military helicopters to Argentina for the first time, despite renewed tensions with the UK over the Falkland Islands.

The state department said the proposed $140m (£103m) deal – which would give Buenos Aires four UH-60L helicopters – would improve Argentina's ability "to meet current and future threats".

The move follows Donald Trump's inflammatory comments about the Falklands, with the US president suggesting he would not help Britain fight an invasion of the islands by Argentina.

Last week, The Telegraph reported that the US could also oppose Britain's claim to sovereignty over the islands to encourage Andy Burnham to spend more on defence.

Announcing the Black Hawk deal, a US official said: "This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a major non-Nato ally that is a force for political stability and economic progress in South America.

"The proposed sale will improve Argentina's capability to meet current and future threats by providing the additional capacity to conduct border security, counter-transnational crime, and humanitarian assistance/disaster response."

I was reviewing an analysis yesterday of a renewed conflict over the Falklands. The analyst’s conclusion was that the existing garrison in the Falklands could likely defeat a conventional Argentine invasion, but if they managed a landing and overwhelmed the garrison and then were reinforced, it was very unlikely that the British would be able to take the islands back.

It won't matter.

South Africa used to be an advanced nation with a formidable military in the 1980s.

One of the UK’s few functioning warships is stationed in the Falklands.

The British can’t even defend Portsmouth from invaders. No rational person can think they would be able to defend Port Stanley.

Falkland Islanders need to be brushing up on their Spanish.

We need to get the Falklands into the hands of Argentina before the Muslims totally take over the UK.

“South Africa used to be an advanced nation with a formidable military in the 1980s.”

Amazing how England frittered everything away with woke-ism.

Argentina now has a conservative president. Couldn’t he use the Blackhawks to get rid of communists, the way Chile’s Pinochet did?

I think they would prefer the A-4 Skyhawk, considering the damage they were able to inflict with them during the war.

Well, Argentina's current fleet is aging out.

The Argentinians are spoiling for a fight over the "Malvinas," that's fer sure.

In 2014, the three hosts of the BBC's "Top Gear" TV show (the automotive "Three Stooges") shot an episode in Argentina. As usual, the episode involved each of the hosts having to buy a car (while back in England) for so little money that it was guaranteed to be a maintenance nightmare.

Head host Jeremy Clarkson bought a clapped-out Porsche 928 without paying attention to the license plate that came on it.

Some Argentinian wackadoodle saw the license plate and decided Clarkson had special-ordered it to mock the Argentinians over the 1982 war. He rounded up a posse and they pelted the Top Gear crew and their cars with eggs and rocks, breaking out most of the glass on all three cars, plus the camera crew's vehicles. The crew ran for their lives hoping to flee to Chile but had to pick another route when they were warned that there was a mob of 300 cars full of pissed-off Argentinians waiting for them in the next town up the road.

Stuff like this would give Argentina a bad name -- if it weren't for all the Nazis who hid out there.
