Trump Wants to Give Out $5,000 Checks. It Would Cost More Than $1 Trillion.
The New York Times ^ | John Yoon

Posted on 09/10/2026 1:35:34 PM PDT by NoLibZone

President Trump on Wednesday floated the idea of issuing every American adult a $5,000 “dividend” check if his party kept control of the House and Senate in November — an extraordinary offer that would cost more than $1 trillion and likely would require congressional approval.

“It will be called the Trump dividend,” he said at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas. He added a caveat: The money must be spent in the United States, though he did not say how the government could track where private citizens used the funds. He offered few additional details about the idea.

How could the payments affect the economy? There are about 240 million adult citizens in the United States, according to the Census Bureau, which means that the payments could cost about $1.2 trillion if Mr. Trump were able to get them approved. Economists said that such an expenditure would exacerbate the federal budget deficit of about $2 trillion and the national debt, which recently passed $40 trillion.

The payouts would likely lead to a rise in inflation, though it is difficult to predict by how much, said Ina Simonovska, an economics professor at the University of California, Davis.

They could also lead to an increase in interest rates, which are already elevated and trending higher, said Lee Ohanian, a professor of economics at the University of California, Los Angeles.

MAGA joins the socialist movement.

Well, in the end, even Barry Goldwater went insane.

In the end some Freepers went the way of the New York Times

Getting a $5000 refund. Putting it into circulation. Not socialism

A paper that runs on subsidies with bankrupt level readership that can’t create a single crossword without inserting a lesson on the pillars of Islam lecturing us on communism?

Geeze.

Well...here’s an interesting nugget...FWIW...

“The total annual cost of all federal, state, and local welfare programs in the U.S. is approximately $1.13 trillion (FY 2023) to $1.82 trillion (FY 2026 estimate)”

Democrats made the same argument for erasing student debt.

“””President Trump on Wednesday floated the idea of issuing every American adult a $5,000 “dividend””””

Two points—

1. Trump said every American adult CITIZEN would get 5000.

2. I hope Trump’s idea actually happens. One, the Lefties will go bonkers when their illegal invaders do not get $5000. and two, I would hope a citizen would have to provide proof of citizenship before they get 5000. That would help solve the Voter ID and citizenship problem.

“Democrats made the same argument for erasing student debt.”

How does that argument make this socialism?

Oh for pity’s sake. he isn’t buying an election. That would be the case if money was sent out prior to the election.

All he is doing is talkin’.😏

No, you’re wrong.

You’re just trying to nail Trump.

But you have nothing.

Definition of socialism: lying, stealing and political violence.

Trump is simply giving dividends to the owners of our natural resources.

Learn the difference!

The New York Times loves to lie. But they’re probably right in this case.

Anyway, every leader needs a trusted advisor. Some old guy who will plainly tell the leader, “That’s actually not such a good idea.”

Unfortunately, most leaders will not tolerate such an advisor.

(Get my drift?)

So you don’t feel red distribution of people’s wealth through taxation is socialism?

So you have no issues with the government distribution of wealth.

At a fundamental level, it comes back to an inherently flawed idea that “Government” is responsible for saving you. That it should be responsible for handing out participation trophies and that somehow - just living entitles you to more than you sweat, earn, and intelligently make for yourself.

I’m actually sympathetic to the political idea - lord knows the leftists have used it as long as I’ve been alive - that handouts can win elections.

But don’t expect me to go along with it. It’s an historically proven bad idea, it makes ZERO economic sense, and it undercuts a core pillar of my conservative principles.

Two months out from a midterm that looks increasingly rough? Maybe you throw a hail mary.

I know I’d make a terrible politician because I’d probably spend my whole campaign telling people get a job, get a BETTER job, adapt, take charge of your fortunes... and I’ll just work on cutting off the trough at the front end. and I’d maybe get 0.2%.
