Trump Officials Draft Plan to Pay At-Home Parents, Using Funds for Working Ones
New York Times ^ | September 5, 2026 | Coral Davenport

The proposed benefit, a top policy priority for Vice President JD Vance, would apply only to married couples and tap a fund intended to provide federal child care subsidies to working parents.

The Trump administration is moving to allow married couples with a stay-at-home spouse to collect child care subsidies, a policy championed by Vice President JD Vance, using funds from a federal program intended to assist working parents, according to people familiar with the discussions.

The change would create the only federal subsidy to pay parents to stay home and raise their children, one of the most significant efforts to date by the Trump administration to harness federal funds to promote a traditional view of families.

To do so, officials are seeking to use a Health and Human Services Department fund that was created in the 1990s to help low-income and working-class parents afford child care so they could work or go to school.

Under the draft new rule, parents who stay home with their children could benefit from the program, which typically provides about $9,000 per child each year, potentially reshaping which families get federal child care money.

The move could end up redirecting money away from working parents and their child care providers, causing some to raise their rates or even close, critics said, potentially worsening what many experts say is a child care crisis in the country.

And why should the government favor subsidizing working mothers over stay at home mothers? Ideally neither should be subsidized but if working mothers are subsidized then stay at home mothers should get the same benefits.

“ top policy priority for Vice President JD Vance”

Maybe it’s their way of keeping him out of the White House

What a dumb, poorly-timed, unnecessary idea

I guess you get what you incentivize, so they are choosing to incentivize stay at home moms verse career women I suppose.

This wisdom of this (or any) plan aside, the United States is a debtor nation. So the money will have to be borrowed before it can be spent.

The GOP has tried this for generations.

You can’t out-Democrat the Democrats with welfare gimmick checks. The Democrats will always give more checks, and in greater dollar amounts.

I do not see how America can survive two welfare parties redistributing money from the productive.

This idea stinks.

Apparently, Vance has been pushing this for a very long time. Before VP was a glint in his eye.

Rubio has moved to #1 for me re 2028.

Exactly. And I suspect they know that. But it’s election season, so they are offering handouts.

You’re just a greedy person who wants to keep the money you earned.

/sarc (kind of)

Actually, you don’t “earn”. All our paychecks are nothing more than a dispensation of government one way or the other.

Don’t you realize the importance of from each according to their ability, to each according to their need?

Possibly a stay at home mom and a dad in the house can cut down on the crime rate?

Just another reason that the plans to put money outside of the U.S. have been in motion. At some point, it can’t sustain itself.

We are already paying women to stay at home in their tax-payer funded houses. At the same time, tax-payers are paying for someone else to watch those women’s children. You just have to be the right color to qualify.

Great. Let’s come up with another way to pay people that are not working.

This is a vote buying scheme because Republicans haven’t delivered on their 2024 campaign promises (except sealing the border and deporting people illegally here).
