Iceland has sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s social media post of a map that appears to show the island and several other countries covered by the American flag.
Trump posted the image on Truth Social on Monday, depicting the U.S., Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean under the Stars and Stripes flag.
The map was published without comment and came after a flurry of preceding posts suggesting that the U.S. state of New Mexico should be renamed “New America.”
Iceland summoned U.S. Ambassador Billy Long over the incident, with Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Gunnarsdottir saying the meeting was necessary to “make it absolutely clear that, from our perspective, this was completely unacceptable.”
Speaking at a news conference, Gunnarsdottir said that the Nordic nation of nearly 400,000 stood with Greenland over Trump’s annexation threats and would not soften its position on the matter.
“It is absolutely clear that this is a fundamental principle. In my view, this is not a joke, and if it is meant to be a joke, it is a very poor one,” Gunnarsdottir said, according to Iceland’s national broadcaster RÚV.
A White House spokesperson was not immediately available to comment when contacted by CNBC on Wednesday morning.
The U.S. president has long advocated for control over Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory, on national security grounds. Notably, Trump appeared to repeatedly mix up Greenland and Iceland during a special address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland earlier in the year.

Manifest Destiny.
He is a stupid person overreacting to a joke. No wonder he is in government.
TDS the foreign version.
TDS the foreign version.
TDS the foreign version.
Exactly.
Last week had Canada freaking out about Lake America. Then we had officials in New Mexico heaading for the fainting couch over New America. Now this?
I can’t believe the rambling trolling antics of Trump can overwhelm these idiots.
Iceland.
Where they practice Eugenics and believe in faeries.
That’s one North American Union map that’s not globalist-approved
Glad there is time for stupid, pointless posting with elections in November.
We’re gonna Wreck ya Vík!
Troll of the Century award! Well done. More please!
The reactions are priceless.
As for the "it's just a joke" crowd....
If The president of Mexico posted a map of North America with a Mexican flag over the United States, we wouldn't just laugh it off as a joke. We'd be pissed.
When some leftist Democrat says something outrageous about guns, or children, or transgenderism, we never just dismiss it with "oh. they're just trolling us.". We assume that anything said by an elected leader is fair game for criticism. And if they say something outrageous, we take every political advantage of it we can.
I'm not sure why some people are unable to see that works both ways. The stuff some think is just Trump "trolling" still makes effective propaganda for the left to use against moderate and swing voters. a foreign leader made similar jokes about the United States, or some leftist says something outrageous, we would never just laugh it off and say that they're just trolling us. We'd be outraged, And do everything we could to take political advantage of it.

It’s even better than we begin bombing in 5 minutes.
Hadn’t heard the one about “New America”.
Kinda catchy!
I frankly this is a bit below presidential level activity. How about trolling Iran and wiping out the IRG. Those a holes are dismantling the international petrochemical industry. They want Stone Age, give them one.
Lighten up, Francis.
