US destroys 5 Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island to turn the screws on Tehran

American forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island and Jask on Tuesday as the US added military might to its economic squeeze of the Islamic Republic.

US Central Command said in a statement that it carried out the strikes that downed five Iranian crude oil carriers in response to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) targeting of an American warship with ballistic missiles in the last two days.

That US warship evaded the Iranian attacks and no American personnel were harmed, per CENTCOM.

But the IRGC lost its crude oil carriers “M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, and M/T Riesco in the Gulf of Oman as well as M/T Derya near Kharg Island.”

“American forces directed the crews to abandon ship before the vessels were struck and rendered inoperable,” CENTCOM noted.

“Iran has used the tankers as part of a multibillion-dollar shadow network that funds the IRGC and its regional proxies. Iran has no means by which to defend these vessels.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iranian_shadow_fleet

The Iranian shadow fleet is a network of oil tankers, shell companies, and covert logistical operations used by the Islamic Republic of Iran to secretly export oil in defiance of international sanctions, primarily those imposed by the United States. This shadow fleet plays a central role in sustaining Iran’s sanctioned economy, particularly in funding the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its foreign operations.

Background
Following the re-imposition of U.S. sanctions after Washington’s 2018 withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran turned to covert oil exports to maintain its revenues. With the formal energy sector increasingly isolated from global markets, Iran constructed a clandestine supply chain supported by hundreds of maritime vessels operating under false identities, with manipulated tracking systems and fraudulent documentation.[1][2][3][4]

Structure and operations
The ghost fleet consists of vessels with obscured ownership, often registered under flags of convenience in jurisdictions such as Panama and the Marshall Islands. Many ships operate with automatic identification system (AIS) transponders disabled, engage in ship-to-ship transfers, and employ deceptive shipping practices like falsified bills of lading or misrepresented cargo origins. These practices have enabled Iran to move millions of barrels of crude oil to countries such as China, Syria, and Venezuela, circumventing sanctions enforcement.[5][6] The most notable area known for this oil transactions is the calm waters near Malaziya, outside its territorial waters, yet still within its exclusive economic zone.[4]

These are BIG Tankers. I assume they were empty of crude sans the outrage of environmentalists? Not that I care much otherthan for some of the fish.

“Rendered inoperable” is not destroyed.

“Destroyed” is destroyed.

Great reporting, Peter. You’re working far above your principle.

So it seems that our surveillance assets are so good that they know who the tankers are despite false papers and registration, plus know if they’re hauling oil at the time - helping home in strategic strikes to minimize environmental disasters. And like the Israelis are nice enough to alert oiler crews to abandon ship before the actions.

I think our people might know what they’re doing. Alert the press!

In the last several days we have disabled 7 tankers and sunk one — the one was clearly not loaded. I assume the thought was that the Iranians might tow an empty tanker back to port and use it for storage — we want to put pressure on them by NOT allowing them any more storage than need be.

The other 7, so far I can tell, were loaded or partially loaded. (Not all of the imagery is particularly helpful, for some.)

Depending on winds and currents, we don’t want to risk fouling waters and shorelines of friendly countries.

Good question. I’m actually surprised that there were any Iranian tankers left to sink.

I was rather rudely informed, earlier today, that the war was over and we had won.

So I guess none of this happened ...

That or maybe the war is still on ...
