A Virginia mother of five was convicted of "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" last week for allowing her 5-year-old son to walk from home to a nearby pond to collect goose feathers in their gated community earlier this summer.
Karyann Parkinson, a law clerk who was eight months pregnant at the time of the incident, was also placed on a government child abuse and neglect registry, where she will remain for seven years. The judge immediately suspended a six-month jail sentence, but the charge remains. Now her attorney is planning an appeal that's expected to go to trial in February.
"I made an intelligent, calculated decision based on knowing my sweet boy and what he's capable of," says Parkinson, whose children range from 2 months to 14 years. "That is far from a crime."
It's just the latest example, though, of cops or child protective services being called over situations once thought mundane — a trend that began heating up over a decade ago, when Maryland mom Danielle Metiv faced criminal charges (later dropped) for letting her kids, 10 and 6, walk home alone from a nearby park. Similar incidents, like parents in trouble over a kid riding a scooter alone, keep happening.
Lenore Skenazy, an advocate for childhood freedom who founded Let Grow and coined the phrase "free-range parenting," first reported on the story in Reason.
"I made an intelligent, calculated decision based on knowing my sweet boy and what he's capable of," says Parkinson, whose children range from 2 months to 14 years. "That is far from a crime."

Pure insanity.
Karens are ruining everything fun.
Back the Blue...
That’s the truth.
Good grief!
The nanny-state rules...
Big time.
Anarcho-tyranny at work.
6 months in jail for allowing your kid to walk in a gated community but hey it’s a ok to strangle your 5 yr old though for that you get a million bucks and cards of encouragement
A half mile walk alone is insanity in certain areas for a child or an adult. In a gated and patrolled community, it is just a walk home. Circa 1957 I would ride my bicycle to school and back, about a mile and a half. I was 9 and in perfect safety in Pecos, Texas. Bad things happened to child molesters in Pecos in 1957, very bad things. Oddly I know of not one student in my elementary school that was accosted and molested.
Raising their children to be competent, self-reliant adults is the primary responsibility of parents.
And you do this by giving them responsibility, in limited amounts, and controlled circumstances.
The Progressives don’t want competent, self-reliant adults, so of course they opposed this.
My birth through age five as one of seven children, I remember walking everywhere in our neighborhood without the supervision of my parents. I’m talking about the mid 50s, I guess childhood has regressed and I was lucky that I didn’t have bubble parents or government intervention. It’s no wonder nowadays that young adults can’t handle life.
Meanwhile, feral black children roam the streets at all hours of the day and night without bother.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations...
The kid is smarter and more level-headed than the HOA, security staff and local judges.
Is there a father? Why is she so busy she can’t walk with him? If this happened while she had a caretaker with him what would have happened? The caretaker would never have done this, that’s the likely explanation
I was a little kid in the 1960s in a little hood. We went out and about but not far. My mother with a herd of kids needed to know where was I going. Who was I going with and when am I coming back.
A half a mile alone at five is unreasonable. And that’s 1960s
It’s now 2026 after the Bidens and obamas flooded us with criminals who take kids for sex and money and that’s after bush and Obama who started it
She lives in a gated community for safety. Her neighbor called security. For the kid’s sake.
This lady can just move to the un gated community if she wants people who’ll aid and abet her child neglect.
Huff
Jeez! When I was growing up, albeit in a rural community, the family home was 1/2 mile from the grade school. It was expected that the children would walk that 1/2 mile to attend school and walk home that 1/2 mile. Bus transportation was not available. In the summer, that was fine but in the winter that 1/2 mile seemed like forever.
We walked to school in 1963. With a gang. In a neighborhood where I STILL know the names of all the parents
Or your 8 month old
The world turned upside down
