Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) are calling for a ban on artificial superintelligence and a broader pause on the development of advanced models following a string of AI-powered cyberattacks.
The pair are preparing to introduce a bill that would ban the development and deployment of superintelligence and pause development of cutting-edge AI models until an agency is created to monitor their capabilities and identify potential risks.
Sanders and Casar, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, have positioned themselves as leading voices on the left warning of the potential for mass job loss and economic disruption while Big Tech flourishes.
“Nearly every day, there is a frightening new story about how Big Tech companies are losing control of the technology they are developing, with potentially cataclysmic results,” Sanders said in a statement. “It is irresponsible for society to allow them to move forward and make these products even more advanced.”
Casar said that superintelligence, a type of AI with cognitive capabilities that far surpass humans, “could risk the security, freedom, and lives of Americans.”
“Despite its potential deadly consequences, cutting edge AI technology is less regulated than the average food truck,” he said. “That must change.”
Casar in an interview earlier this year said Democrats were “in the wilderness” when it comes to AI issues and called for the party to be “AI populists” who “stand with working people who know in their gut that AI right now is just going to make a few billionaires into trillionaires while making millions of Americans poorer, less safe and less free.”
Sanders was the first member of Congress to call for a moratorium on the construction of data centers that power AI.

AI, if it ever is invented, would be a possible danger.
Career politicians are a clear, present and demonstrable danger to all life.
…And then they broke into the mills and threw wrenches and sticks into the looms to stop the use of water power and machines to make our clothes.
And the result of Bernie and the other guy will be exactly the same. Progress won’t be halted.
And how will “The Bern” enforce that in regard to China or any foreign nation?
