Hungary has blocked Ukraine’s EU accession process for a third time, with the government saying it will only lift its objection if Kyiv makes progress on the rights of the country’s Hungarian minority.
The latest dispute emerged at the European Council’s Working Party on Enlargement and Countries Negotiating Accession (COELA), which held its first meeting after the summer recess on Tuesday, 1 September.
According to Ukrainska Pravda citing European Pravda’s sources in Brussels, Hungary refused to approve the screening results for Ukraine’s second and third negotiating clusters. Without unanimous support from all 27 EU member states, the Council cannot move forward with formally opening the clusters.
The latest Hungarian objection concerns Cluster 2, covering the EU internal market, and Cluster 3, which deals with competitiveness and inclusive growth. Hungary had previously blocked technical preparations for Ukraine’s Clusters 2–6. It subsequently lifted its objection to Cluster 6, which covers foreign and security policy, trade policy and relations with third countries.

Magyar's precondition for lifting the veto was that the needs of the Hungarian community in the Transcarpathia region be addressed.

Recognized minorities can form their own local and national self-governing bodies to manage their own cultural and educational institutions. The law guarantees the right to study in a native mother tongue, use native names on official documents, and receive state-funded bilingual or minority-language schooling.

If you mean Turkish citizens working the EU vs Ukrainian citizens working - the Ukrainians get more rights to do so
If you mean ethnic Turks vs ethnic Ukrainians - generally Ukrainians are freer to get in

Yep. It only takes one country in the EU to exercise a veto, to block Ukraine’s membership. And we all know at least THREE countries already in the EU will keep on doing it.

So, isn’t it time we started to treat the Russian argument that simply by extending an invitation to Ukraine to join either org is a hostile act against Russia, tantamount to justifying them waging a hybrid war to prevent Ukraine’s accessions to either bloc, like the horseshit that it is?
i’ll never understand them people... Kosovo/albania is 95% muslim. the other three areas average 80-85% muslim. why are these countries, hungary with a .03% muslim population, insisting on Muslim acceptance to join the EU?

Albania is NOT 95% Mohammedan.
Islam is a little under 50% and decreasing rapidly as it is seen as a religion imposed by outsider conquerors.
Kosovo is 95% mohammedan but it is seen as a way to not be assimilated into Serbia - the Serbs used Orthodoxy as a way of assimilation, just like the Russians tried in Chechnya - and with the same results

Well, for the starters the Turks aren't in the EU....
Albania was officially an atheist country under the dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. When he died in 1985, people would identify with the religion of their ancestors, but they were generally not actively religious themselves. Technically, Albania is about 45-50% Muslim, but it is not universally practiced and is not of the more extreme variety. Christianity has been making increasing inroads in Albania over the past 30 years or so. As far as politics go, Albania is one of the most pro-American countries on the planet.

Hurray for Hungary. Yes, we want the ethnic minorities of Ukraine to have their rights protected.
A similar thing happened with Sweden and Finland joined NATO. In that case, Turkey had some matters to resolve.
For many people, the following will sound like a contradiction, but we’re for (a) central governments that protect individual rights from states, while (b) respecting states rights. It’s called federalism.

Albania, under Hoxha, was the world’s first “Atheist State”, so that cut deeply in the percentage of Muslims in Albania.
Good points Kronos. For the reason you discuss, I think the Catholics have the better hand to play in Kosovo than the Orthodox.
Really good insight as to Chechnya (and quite a few other places); how people latch on to a distinctive religion to maintain their national identity. Poland is maybe the best example.
After JPII died, I watched a funeral mass from Poland. From the music, I recognized their singing, in their language, “We are one in the spirit, we are one in the lord, and we pray that our unity will one day be restored.”
