The new U.S. Department of Justice Program, which aims to give nonviolent offenders an opportunity to have their Second Amendment rights restored after an extensive review process, is already yielding success.
As TTAG readers are aware, federal law disables the firearms rights of many citizens who have been convicted of crimes without regard to whether they actually pose a threat of violence. Attorney General Todd Blanche announced on August 17 a finalized federal regulation allowing eligible individuals prohibited from possessing firearms to apply to restore their federal firearm rights. According to Blanche, the final rule would protect Second Amendment rights while keeping firearms out of the hands of dangerous individuals.
“The Second Amendment is not a second-class right, and the federal government should not permanently deprive Americans of a constitutional right without regard to whether they pose a danger to public safety,” AG Blanche said at the time in a news release announcing the rule. “This rule establishes a rigorous, commonsense process that protects the public while giving deserving Americans a real path to restoration.”

I have no problem with this at all.
But, the felon still has to get his rights restored in his home state.
Ohio will restore your 2nd Amendment rights if you apply. But it is not a simple process.
And not everyone is successful.
Of course you will need a lawyer to guide you through the process. So it is not cheap.

I would have thought politicians would need to go through the same extensive, time consuming, ineffective and expensive processes to be granted their first amendment rights.
Practically ALL politicians say dangerous things and we need to keep politicians on a leash.
I am sure there will be great moaning and screeching from the holier-than-thou crew, right up until THEY get screwed out of THEIR rights.

Once folks found out THEIR Fourth Amendment rights were tossed into an old, end of summer latrine, they went nuclear.
ALLL of a sudden those kooky Second Amendment folks are starting to make a LOT of sense.
Just like putting politicians THROUGH A POLITICAL BACKGROUND CHECK, or they can chose to be put on a leash...

I have not ever understood how a right is not returned after incarceration and why the taking of gun rights is always sought yet there are so many other ways to act violently with something other than a gun.
I do a lot expungements here in Missouri for clients. Nobody should be banned from owning a firearm because they wrote a felony bad check for $168.00 in 1987.
Most gun regulations are in place in the hopes of disarming you permanently. That only works for honest people though.
Flock cameras should be accessible by the public and installed in all Congressional hallways, offices and the chambers themselves.
Until 1968 there were no prohibitions against felons owning firearms.
I wonder if a state has any say if the offender was strictly convicted under Federal laws.
I only know one guy in that situation. He was jailed for Heroin distribution many years ago. I don’t remember the details but he was released due to some prosecutorial irregularities in the trial.
He became a born-again Christian while in prison and spent many years after that evangelizing and helping addicts.
He’s the real deal. He was once badly injured in a construction accident and wouldn’t even take a tylenol.
He is truly a guy who turned his life around but he has lost many civil rights.
