Here are the four takeaways. 1. Fish trumps it all
For those outside Iceland, it was tempting to analyse the referendum through a geopolitical lens: Russia's war on Ukraine, China's unfair competition and, of course, Donald Trump and his punitive tariffs and threats to annex Greenland.
But the key driver of the vote was none other than fish.
The country jealously protects its fishing rights. Between 1958 and 1976, Iceland and the United Kingdom were engaged in a series of confrontations dubbed the "Cod Wars", concluding with Reykjavík's victory over London.
2. A stark urban-rural divide
The urban-rural divide in the referendum was unmistakable.
Out of the six constituencies in the country, only two voted "yes". And those two happen to be in the capital, Reykjavík, the centre of power.
3. The status quo stands strong
By rejecting accession talks, Icelanders stand by the tailor-made status quo they have forged across decades of engagement with Brussels.
Iceland already enjoys broad, unfettered access to the single market under the European Economic Area agreement together with Norway and Liechtenstein. (Fisheries and agriculture are notably excluded from this scheme.)
The Nordic island is part of the Schengen Area, the Emissions Trading System (ETS) and flagship programmes like Erasmus and Horizon. This level of access has required Iceland to adoptnearly 9,000 pieces of EU legislation, without having a vote in Brussels.
4. No accession for the wealthy

So if it was “should Iceland restart talks on joining the EU?” - it should be 60% voting to restart talks or else the status quo remains

Props to the Islandic people for voting for their independence to navigate their own way and to not surrender that Freedom to globalist/leftist Brussels bureaucrats,
It's interesting that it's almost always the urban areas that take the liberal / globalist position. If you think about it, maybe that's why they're all stuffed together in communal-type urban living to begin with.
The old ‘common community of interest’ platitude that governs public body incorporation boundries is in play here as rightly so.
Note it was not tainted by contamination tamperering as has been with USA democrat open border doings to steal elections and uproot ways of life.

I still maintain that if the “Brexiteers” had not handled the implementation of Brexit so badly, this “rejection” would have been considerably more emphatic.
The EU doesn’t want them.
It is urgent that the EU not apply for Iceland's membership.

They do quite well as a tourist trap. I can’t imagine why they need the EU.

I really can't believe that anyone paying attention to what is going on in the EU states can want to be any part of it regardless of what it may do for trade.
