US threatens Britain over Falklands
The Telegraph ^ | August 28, 2026 | Connor Stringer

The United States has threatened to oppose Britain's sovereignty over the Falkland Islands if Andy Burnham does not increase defence spending, The Telegraph can reveal.

The proposal is among measures being drawn up by senior defence officials at the Pentagon as an incentive to hit Nato's 5 per cent spending pledge.

A senior US official told The Telegraph that Britain was likely to receive "special attention" in Washington's review of its allies' commitment to Nato, which will examine whether member nations have credible paths toward the target.

Officials in Washington believe that while Britain has the potential to be a leading defence partner, the defence investment plan, announced by Sir Keir Starmer in June, was not enough of a "step in the right direction".

"I would expect the UK to receive special attention because it has so much potential," the official said of the review. "We will therefore continue efforts to incentivise and enable the UK to step up in a major way."

Asked about the prospect of the US changing its position on the Falklands, they added: "I can say that they [conversations] are candid and nothing is being ruled out as far as options for encouraging the sort of burden-sharing that we seek."

The discourse from Washington will concern Mr Burnham and John Healey, his Chancellor, whose first Budget will fail to commit to spending 3 per cent of GDP on defence by 2030.

When he quit as defence secretary in June, Mr Healey claimed that Sir Keir was "unable" and the Treasury "unwilling" to spend the money needed to defend the country.

However, government sources told the Financial Times that the Chancellor would not make any commitments relating to the 3 per cent figure in his Budget on Oct 28.

Britain vs. Argentina, regarding the Falklands.

The US should stay completely out of it. But I guess we can’t. Like all the great (and fallen) empires of old, we have to have our nose in everything, everywhere.

Disclaimer: I’d probably feel differently if it were still Margaret Thatcher’s Britain. But it’s not.

A lousy 5 percent.

And they can’t even keep that promise?

Pathetic.

Trump is exploring options.

But he’s on to something here.

Why should we back them up with the Falklands, if they don’t back us up with Iran / Hormuz?

Our relationship with the Euros has been a one way road for decades, where they have come to EXPECT our help, but we can’t depend on them for anything.

I wouldn’t help Argentina, but I also wouldn’t stand in their way as we did the last time they tried to seize these islands (the all aspect AIM 9L we provided them was alone a great advantage which leveled the playing field, despite the UK having a far inferior jet for A2A).

Britain will be ruled by Islamists soon enough. Why do we want them to have strong military?

They have to pay for their sh***y ‘free’ health care system.
We are essentially subsidizing it for them.

They'll be ruled by Islamists or have a strong military.

The only Islamic country with a formidable military is Turkey.

These countries want a war with Russia, they want to supposedly defend Greenland from us, but they spend spit on defense. It’s absurd.
I’ve been reading Britain has enough ammo for one day.

Britain would have to spend a lot more to get their Navy on shape. It’s a sad pathetic shell of it’s past self.

I do agree - our military has played the role of Euro-socialism-offset/subsidy for many years.

If the Euro elitists had to actually pay for their own military, they wouldn’t be able to afford so much of this lavish welfare nonsense.

And then they rub our noses in it. Punks. “Oh you Americans are stupid for not having 80 weeks off of work paid vacation to celebrate (_________________)”

Yeah because we paid for it for you.

If Margaret Thatcher were alive today she’d be sounding a lot like Enoch Powell.

People. There will be no Falklands war2. We should take the side of the Argentines. We did it with the canal(South America) There’s only 2,000 Brits there who are not entitled to an opinion on the subject-too expensive. We should be the arbitrator and get what we can out of it. Argentina is freer than GB and they don’t have a muslim problem.
