King Harald V of Norway, Europe’s oldest monarch, has died at the age of 89, after 35 years on the throne.
Harald is succeeded as monarch by his son Haakon.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, Queen Sonja, two children, and five grandchildren. His granddaughter Ingrid Alexandra now becomes heir to the Norwegian throne.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said, “a whole nation is in mourning” after Harald’s death, with the people of Norway “left with a deep sense of gratitude for a long life in the service of Norway.” The government declared a national period of mourning, as crowds gathered outside the royal palace in Oslo to pay their respects.
Tributes rolled in from across Europe following the announcement, from other royal houses in Sweden, Denmark and the United Kingdom, to political leaders of various nations.
Britain’s King Charles said his family was mourning a “friend whose kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty echoed from across the sea and across the decades,” while Denmark’s King Frederik and Queen Mary remembered Harald as a “fine man with a twinkle in his eye and a big heart.”
Harald’s health had deteriorated significantly over recent days after he was admitted to hospital with “fluid accumulation in the body,” due to a blood disorder. He later developed an infection.
Harald was 53 years old when he ascended the throne in 1991.
In accordance with their own wishes, Harald and Sonja held a consecration ceremony, which included traditions dating back to the Middle Ages, at Trondheim’s Nidaros Cathedral in central Norway on June 23, 1991. Following the ceremony, they conducted a 10-day tour of southern Norway, and later a 22-day tour of Norway’s four northernmost counties in 1992.

The royal wedding in 1968
and the series based on it - surprisingly quite watchable
This is the one who threatened to remain single if the wedding was approved of.
I wonder if Norwegian preppers name their daughters Offgrid.
Outgrid
Clever, especially for 7:14 in the morning.
The King appears to have been a fine man; unfortunately, his daughter in law and now Queen Bee to be, was not. She hobnobbed closely with Jeffrey Epstein long after his conviction and too-short imprisonment for pedophilia and now is all boo-hoo about what a mistake it was when she knew exactly what a low rent bum this felon was.
Interesting.
😁🙄😎...............................
When I saw the headline I assumed this had something to do with Vikings.
Was don’t hear much about other European monarchs, except for the English gifters! The English gifters should do what other monarchs and be quiet!!
Latter day Vikings. Like Sven Svensensensen.
It surprises me that there have only been five Haralds who have reigned over Norway. Its a famous name. The first Harald was the king who launched the invasions of England in the 900s.
