MOSCOW, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Russia warned on Thursday that it could strike British military targets inside and outside Ukraine in response to Ukrainian attacks on targets inside Russia using long-range British cruise missiles.
The warning, delivered by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at a news briefing in Moscow, has been made before but without such rhetorical force or urgency.
Zakharova said that London was just "one step away" from becoming legally complicit — in Moscow's eyes — for what she called "terrorism" against Russian civilians and warned of "inevitable catastrophic consequences" unless Britain changed course.
Her reference to "terrorism" was related to the use of the Franco-British Storm Shadow/SCALP missiles by Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia or targets on territory in eastern Ukraine, which Russia claims as its own.
"We have repeatedly warned that any British military installations and equipment in Ukraine and beyond its borders could be targeted in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory carried out using British weapons," said Zakharova.
"We propose that the British leadership once again carefully analyse the situation and immediately, in the most resolute and unequivocal manner, abandon the hostile, aggressive line, which can only ... create the risk of the conflict escalating to an entirely new level," she said.
There was no immediate response from London, which has previously brushed off similar Russian warnings and made it clear it is committed to doing whatever it thinks is necessary to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia.

By all rules of combat, they’re right, of course. But we all know that Russia won’t do that...unless given go other choice.
If they do hopefully Trump says, not my war
No, they are not. Giving arms to a third party does not make you a co-belligerent. Only strikes from British bases would make those bases legitimate targets.
Putin is delusional if he thinks threats against NATO will get Europe to stop backing Ukraine.
This is how WWI for the US started. The sinking of the Lusitania because although it was a passenger liner, it was carrying a cargo of weapons supplies to the UK.................................
“Russia warned on Thursday that it could strike British military targets...”
It’ll take longer than it’s worth to find any.
Get the USA out of NATO now and watch how quickly the Brits start behaving.
If so then naturally Britain can also launch its nukes.
Putin is not wrong either, but he is insane.
“No, they are not. Giving arms to a third party does not make you a co-belligerent.”
Like hell, and it’s much more than arms, and EVERYONE knows it, even if they lie.
Like I said, I expect the UK will get ‘some action’ long before Russia buckles.
“This is how WWI for the US started. The sinking of the Lusitania because although it was a passenger liner, it was carrying a cargo of weapons supplies to the UK”
Tell me about it - that’s how it works, if you don’t want to be in a war, then STAY OUT of it.
“””””By all rules of combat, they’re right, of course.”””””
No they aren’t, or modern history would be totally different and World Wars routine everyday stuff.
Britain has military targets?
“No they aren’t, or modern history would be totally different and World Wars routine everyday stuff.”
“routine everyday stuff” doesn’t involve using surrogates to shoot missiles into another country, and of course you guys all know that.
More lying by your side.
If there are Brit advisers there, be carefull. If not, free fire.
You should look at modern history, and not just the big wars like Korea and Vietnam but also Afghanistan and brush wars and invasions all over the place, the countries contributing to their side do not have their homelands attacked, even supplying combat troops as in the case of Russia and China in Korea and Vietnam, and all the other troops supplying combat troops like Australia, and New Zealand, and South Korea didn’t trigger it.
Weapons and supplies sure don’t trigger it, I doubt that Russia wants to start purifying the countries receiving aid process by launching an attack on the 32 nation alliance of NATO.
as Victor Davis Hanson said, Trump “has given President Zelensky greater targeting leeway and access to more controversial weapons than any previous president.”
Throughout the Cold War Russians supplied every possible adversary including Vietnam, North Korea and the list goes on. Then, the US openly supported the Taliban in the Russian/Afghanistan war. So, no. Supplying weapons to belligerents is how the game is played.
What missiles did the US shoot into the Soviet Union?
If GB is “engaged” in assisting Ukraine, and they take a hit for it…that is not a NATO hit.
Let’s say GB is sending material using large RAF cargo planes flying into Kiev. If Russia shoots down one of those planes, it is NOT a NATO trigger.
People need to relax a bit.
Russia is not going to send missiles to London. Not over Ukraine. It makes no sense at all.
