Nurse N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas has won the Democratic Senate primary runoff in Oklahoma, NBC News projects, securing another win for the party’s democratic socialist wing.
Thomas, a 31-year-old member of the Chickasaw Nation, defeated attorney and minister Jim Priest, 70, in the contest, despite being drastically outspent. The two advanced to a runoff after neither clinched a majority of the vote in the initial June primary.
Thomas will face GOP Rep. Kevin Hern, who will be heavily favored this fall to win the open seat to replace former Sen. Markwayne Mullin, now the secretary of homeland security. Oklahoma is a solidly Republican state that President Donald Trump won by 34 points in 2024.
Thomas’ primary victory comes as progressive candidates have made inroads across the country this year. Democratic socialists have won a handful of high-profile primaries in recent weeks, including in Florida’s Senate race and a key House battleground in Michigan.

Every DSA win in the primaries is an easy win for Republicans in the general election.
Sounds more like they were voting against the 70YO guy rather than voting for the DSA stooge...
I suspect it was before she belongs to the ‘tribe’.
Vote for the tribalist? Back in the day tribes were constantly fighting each other. What if you’re not a member of that tribe? Collectivism v. individual BUMP!
That’s the type of thinking that will get us a Democrat House majority. These people are winning without spending money. They are out in the streets hustling, organizing, getting out the vote. Their message is resonating with somebody. Dismiss them at your own risk. They only need 50.1% of the vote. The GOP needs to do the work and smash these people. For every general election win they get, the stronger they’ll become. Everybody in polite society laughed at that those funny little screwball National Socialists in the thirties until Hitler was appointed chancellor.
EXACTLY!!
Excellent reply post.
The DSA are providing so much low hanging fruit for the GOP to go after.
The question is .... are they??
The greatest ally of the DSA is voter apathy. They’re clearly a minority, but if voters who oppose their communist agenda don’t show up on Election Day, they can win.
I think the Chickasaw tribe tends to be very conservative and Christian, like the Cherokees and Choctaws.
REPUBLICAN TURNOUT IS KEY.
I saw a study once that showed the democrat turnout is nearly constant. so *ALL* races are decided by GOP turnout.
ALL OF THEM
We need to get GOP voters so excited to get out to the polls and HELP TRUMP that they can't wait for November.
A Democrat Senate candidate — whoever it is — in Oklahoma could not possibly be more irrelevant. What particular loony-left acronym is assigned to her makes no difference whatsoever. She will lose by dozens of points in November.
Oklahoma election margins of victory for U.S. Senate:
2022: R+26 and R+32
2020: R+30
2016: R+43
2014: R+40 and R+38
2010: R+44
OK, 2026 sure as hell isn’t 2014 or 2010 — far from it — but this drooling tribal radical Democrat has zero chance at even making it close. So this whole article is pointless.
OTOH....
The Governor election in Oklahoma could be very close. It was *supposed* to be very close in 2022 when moderately popular (at most) incumbent Republican Kevin Stitt faced ex-Republican Joy Hofmeister. The polls were close; the outcome wasn’t (Stitt +13.5).
But this year we have an “SAT question” type effect going on:
Gentner Drummond is to Mike Mazzei as John Cornyn is to Ken Paxton. IOW a bitter runoff loser who (along with many of his aides and voters) would sooner see the Democrat win in November than their hated GOP rival.
Cyndi Munson (D) is a typical liberal, complete with “race card” to play, and she is running on a typical liberal platform of “affordability” combined with the usual Democrat boilerplate left-wing drivel.
Some believe she actually has a chance to win, depending on how spiteful Trump-hating loser Drummond is.
In the end, Mazzei ought to win by at least 10 but in THIS election year Republicans can’t afford very much backstabbing amongst themselves, and there’s likely to be as much of that going on in Oklahoma as there is in Texas.
The Republican should still easily prevail. The one in Oklahoma, anyway.
“Sounds more like they were voting against the 70YO guy rather than voting for the DSA stooge...”
My first thought as well. All older politicians running this fall should caution against sounding like a fuddy-duddy ...
