It was meant to be an outing for Black children in Berlin and their families, offering them an exclusive afternoon at an outdoor pool set up by a local theatre.
But the plans, slated for earlier this month, had to be scrapped after they were seized on by rightwing and conservative voices to whip up outrage, leaving organisers fending off racist emails and threats.
Berlin’s Volksbühne theatre said it had extended the invitation in hopes of dismantling some of the barriers that would normally keep these children away from the pool. While other groups had similarly been invited to use pool exclusively without incident, the idea of Black children enjoying a private afternoon at a public pool proved to be controversial among some.
“Berlin is a livable, diverse, colourful and free city. So why do we need safe spaces?” a local Christian Democrat politician, Aileen Weibeler, said on social media, while the far-right Alternative für Deutschland co-leader Alice Weidel described it as “an apartheid” in which “white people are temporarily denied access”.
Earlier this summer, an open-air swimming lake in the eastern German city of Halle made headlines after it refused entry to bathers who did not speak German.
“People get angry at that, saying: ‘How can it be inclusive if it’s just for Black and Asian communities?’” said Rodrigues, who is also a keynote speaker on diversity in aquatics. “My thing is that we’re making the whole of swimming more inclusive by creating these safe little spaces, which lead to more people swimming, and that makes swimming, as a whole, more inclusive.”

I just went on a 3 day business trip to Germany - Metzingen and went to a public pool and there were people of all skin colors and races and no one cared. THAT is being color-blind.
As to the "not allowing those who don't speak German" - the pool I was in had announcement in both English and German - but that's because it was in a fairly touristy area. In smaller places, urgent messages will be in the local language and you need to know it
How long until we see signs in Germany saying, “Deutsche sind hier unerwünscht”. (Germans are not wanted here)
Rumor has it, they had planned to lower a dome over the pool and gas them.

I disagree, I think there should be a couple days at the beginning of the summer devoted to teaching these kids how to swim and float.
I don’t believe anyone/everyone else should be excluded, just that there should be some extra resources devoted to that on those days.
I certainly don’t think people should make a big deal about it.
I know this seems at odds with my typical opinions, but I don’t like kids drowning cause it sucks, and kids should not be pawns in political games.
I’ll say it again. They had no choice. Blacks pee in the pool.
Working hard to bring back concept of “octaroons.” So other kids should be excluded from days of instruction?
Yeah, I figured that it was just so they could change the water afterwards.

Got to agree. My first two years of high school, 1957 and 1958 (no mistake), were spent in an integrated high school. The black kids were really great at all sports except swimming, where they tended to swim like rocks. Since I was a horrible athlete other than in swimming I looked to those 6 weeks of swim class as the one time I could perform well. Indeed, in those two sessions, I attained the Red Cross Swimmer level. In college PE I took and passed Intermediate Swimming where I had to swim a mile. No black kids at all in the class.
