GOP gubernatorial candidate Victor Marx pushes aggressive water-storage expansion at Colorado Water Congress

Victor Marx, the Republican nominee for governor, took the spotlight Wednesday during the opening day of the Colorado Water Congress, laying out how he says the state should approach its water future.

Marx told the standing-room-only audience in Steamboat Springs that he holds water rights himself, giving him a personal stake in Colorado’s water challenges.

His proposed fix? More storage.

“We can’t make it snow, we can’t make it rain, but we can decide whether we’re prepared for when the water comes,” he said. “So, I believe we should store water in good years. Wet years. Lord, please send it.”

He said storage gives farmers and ranchers reliability, options for communities and reduces emergency decisions.

“Drought forces our choices,” he said, adding that with adequate water and storage there will be more choices.

Marx, a first-time political candidate, said he would advocate for greater partnership with the federal government, local and private partners, in part to address forest health issues.

Marx, citing his “pressure-tested leadership,” said he would build a good team that will look for solutions and that “some things should be avoided,” while others would require bold action, although he didn’t identify what that would be.

“A governor needs to be for the people, not for political agendas and not for parties. It’s that simple,” he said. Colorado needs hope, he added and he’s the candidate who will bring it.

Marx drew strong audience applause when he said he would advocate for more responsible storage, better conservation, modern infrastructure, healthy forests, protected watersheds, strong water rights, faster responsible permitting, technology and innovation and long-term planning.

“We need to prepare when the water is abundant,” he said.

Colorado doesn’t need a governor who “simply manages decline,” which he said is what has been happening for years.

The reaction from the audience reaction was mixed. Those who spoke to Colorado Politics said his remarks were better than expected. Several noted it was the first time they’ve ever heard Marx speak.

Colorado Water Congress typically features major-party congressional candidates and top contenders for statewide positions during election years.

Other speakers on Wednesday included U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert and state Republican Sen. Mark Baisley, who is running for the U.S. Senate seat and will face Democratic U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper in November.

Hickenlooper is not attending this year, and Secretary of State Jena Griswold, who is running for attorney general, canceled her appearance on Wednesday.

At one time I thought that if Western man knew anything, it was that infrastructure is the solution to building safe prosperous civilizations.

Didn’t they just finish a super expensive giant reservoir in Larimer county, after years of construction, that they now don’t want to use?

I may be under-informed on that project but that was the last thing I read about it.

Horsetooth Reservoir in Larimer County, Colorado, situated west of Fort Collins.

Not this one ?

The Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project just west of Loveland officially has water flowing after four years of the project being built. The reservoir, once full, will supply water to 12 different municipalities in northern Colorado.

“It basically ranges from Broomfield all the way up to Greeley and kind of everywhere in between,” Chris Manley, ..

Chimney Hollow. Horsetooth has been there for decades.

Maybe it was misinformation but I read that Broomfield backed out of their commitment to take water from CH reservoir just before it was finished.

“Victor Marx, the Republican nominee for governor,”

Pretty sure I’d change my name if running for governor.

Victor Marx won the 2026 Republican primary for Colorado governor in a close race against state Senator Barbara Kirkmeyer ... called the election on July 9, 2026, nine days after the June 30 vote, with Marx securing 39.9% of the ballot to Kirkmeyer’s 39.4%, a margin of fewer than 2,500 votes

I think they are having trouble getting water to fill the expansion.

Of course evaporation is real trouble.

Pretty sure I’d change my name if running for governor.

But think of all the ignorant, liberal (but I repeat myself) votes he will get.

Yes.. = for lurkers =

Two Forks Dam project, water supply reservoir proposed by Denver Water at the confluence of the north and south forks of the South Platte River in Colorado. The project was designed to provide long-term storage for the Denver metropolitan area but was vetoed by the EPA in 1990 under the Clean Water Act
