The H-1B visa program is draining the incentive for complacent politicians to fix the broken K-12 system used by many millions of ordinary Americans, says Daron Acemoglu, a famous economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The educated elite “has given up on the education of Americans because they think that they can fill any skill gap with importing those skills [via the H-1B program], whether they are nurses, whether they’re doctors, whether they’re programmers. That’s the problem,” Acemoglu told Tyler Cowen, a zealously pro-migration economist at George Mason University. Acemoglu is an ethnic Armenian who used the H-1B program to migrate from Turkey to the United States.
The Nobel Prize winner told Cowan:
I would love to have skilled immigration, but I would love also to renew the … social compact of America such that the influential people, be they politicians, journalists, or tech barons, really have a commitment to the education of Americans.
Cowen rebuked him, saying: “I don’t see that,” prompting the Turkey-born immigrant Acemoglu to respond:
Well, about half of people in the United States in middle school read and write a couple of grades below [below standards, and] we’re not doing anything about that despite the fact that everybody recognizes that we are moving into the skills age where we are going to need more and more human capital. We’re not doing anything. We’re just giving up on these people. I think that is what really bothers me, that somehow we have, as the most powerful, arguably the richest, country in the world, have resigned ourselves to give up on the education of about a third to a half of the youth.
“We’re throwing money at it, but we’re not really dealing with the root causes,” Acemoglu added.

I find myself agreeing with the migrant from Turkey that came here on an H1-b visa. I didn't think this was even remotely possible.
He’s not wrong.
Too late!
The horse done left the barn, many decades ago...
Education was completely broken before the invaders arrived...
It sounds about right. You price education out when there are no jobs, because hiring foreigners is cheaper.
What do you want the kids to learn?
Can they learn that by doing what they are asked to do?
Are the educational materials adequate?
Can the teachers offer clarifications?
Can the teachers offer enhancements?
Are the students willing do the necessary work?
Do the students have an incentive to do the necessary work?
....
Notice where I stopped.
“Acemoglu is an ethnic Armenian...to migrate from Turkey to the United States.”
My mother’s parents had the good sense to bolt circa 1900.
The states and school districts have an obligation to the students themselves.
The states set up school systems.
The federal government sets up immigration systems.
These systems should produce a prosperous and large percentage middle class and offer opportunities and incentives to fill the professional occupations, favoring the native born insomuch as reasonable.
“hiring foreigners is cheaper”
That is the key problem.
I am a naturally curious person.
Learning has a value in its own right for me.

In 2022 the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, announced his intention to create a baccalaureate to promote technical education to the city region’s young people. Upon his third re-election as mayor, Burnham committed to give “everyone who grows up [in Greater Manchester] an equal alternative to the university route so all our young people have a path in life and hope in their heart”.
At 14, students must choose which subjects to study to GCSE level. The MBacc fulfils a similar function to the English Baccalaureate (EBacc), in that it is a guide to help students in their choice, based on subjects which good universities consider necessary. Within the MBacc, seven job pathways exist, which correspond to the subjects and qualifications desired most by employers in each industry:
Construction and the Green Economy
Creative, Culture and Sport
Digital and Technology
Education and Early Years
Engineering and Manufacturing
Financial and Professional
Health and Social Care
English language and literature, maths, sciences and digital skills are ‘core qualifications’ and part of every pathway.

How can K—>12 be broken?
Are ‘Rats involved?
Yes yes yes.
In the bigger picture, immigration has become the crutch for failed national policies that not only have left our child behind, but also low caused low and unsustainable birth rates.
Was it so tremendously difficult to define that you mean the English Manchester?! i.e. not the one in NH, USA. (or was it, by design, as a click bait(?)
Well he’s just pointing out the obvious. Admittedly I don’t have a Nobel prize in economics (a load of BS, by the way) but I could have pointed this out as well.
What’s telling, really, is the clown who wanted to argue with him. He spoke an obvious truth, and that’s just not done, you see.
For as long as I can recall, I have said the H1-B was politicians answer to Sputnik
Home schooling is the only alternative for most. That or moving to one of the mostly white school districts.
I have discovered the key problem is the H1-Bs do not possess the same cultural values that translate to ethical norms in the US. Plus, the nature of meritocracy turned into a what I call nepo-caste reality
It makes sense - if you can import people from countries which still teach math and science in school, you don’t need to teach your own kids math and science in school and can focus on political indoctrination.
H1B bump for later....
Turns out George Herbert Walker Bush started this. New World Order...
This POS was known for gutting the hypersonic effort in this country too.
