California Drivers, Business Owners ‘in Hell’ Over New Tire Regulations
New York Post ^ | Aug. 18, 2026 | Ben Chapman

Golden State motorists and business owners are fuming over fresh regulations set to spike the price of new car tires — saying the new rules will further squeeze drivers already battling sky-high costs.

On Monday, the California Energy Commission unanimously green lit the new rules to phase out the sale of replacement tires that don’t meet the state’s energy-efficiency standards.

The change could potentially wipe out 70% of the tires currently available to California drivers, opponents say — and inflate the cost of an average set by hundreds of dollars. “I already can’t afford to buy a new set of tires,” said Kenny Cabello, a student from Long Beach who spoke to The California Post as he wiped down his pickup truck at a local car wash Tuesday. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do.”

Has any governor attacked the poor like Gavin Newsom?

Doesn’t lower rolling resistance mean harder rubber compounds and less grip? And harsher ride?

So more people are going to die in more car crashes.

I have to wonder if Republicans -somehow - are secretly putting these policies into place to destroy the democrats in California.

It might be a good idea to require manufacturers to supply energy-efficiency ratings for their tires. Then let the consumer decide.

But personal freedom is so last century. Big Brother now calls all the shots.

Oops! Maybe I should have said “Big Person” there.

What are the elites going to do? The ol’ McLaren isn’t going to be as nimble as before.

I sure hope this law doesn’t apply to motorcycles.

So more people are going to die in more car crashes.

Which will drive down medical costs and reduce social security payouts, sounds like a win win

Well you could start by voting “right”!

But of course I doubt he’s able to connect the dots.

I wish the reporters asked as a final question to everyone they interview - “Who did you vote for?”

I never hear Republicans calling out these big tax/regulation states.

They don't even say Big Beautiful Bill or explain what is in it.

They are running on at least we aren't them. It's not going to be enough.

Any business that sells tires will be putting up shops every few miles along the NV ans AZ borders. CA is only about 230 miles across at most - a 4 hour drive. The savings on your next tire purchase may justify a day trip to the border.

Societal destruction is their true goal. Everything they do is designed to cause maximum chaos. All couched behind a self-righteous public display of environmental concern.

Environmental regulations are premised upon human health and safety. People driving on old tires is definitely unsafe.

The Stat should be sued.

There is nothing in the make up of the Pubbie Party that would indicate any such level of cleverness. They are the morons you see.
