Did you ever fly on Spirit Airlines? Or work there? Or send an email to someone who worked there? Then your information will soon be feeding Google’s artificial intelligence model.
The discount airline halted all operations in May, and it’s been selling off its remaining assets through the bankruptcy process ever since. While most of that is planes, equipment, and real estate, there’s other things that are valuable, too.
It was disclosed late Monday that the company agreed to sell its data to Google for $10 million. That includes emails and internal communications, spreadsheets, transactions with the public including bookings and frequent flyer information as well as human resources information on its employees.
The data has been stripped of anything that would allow individuals to be identified, according to the court filing. But it is still a massive amount of useful intelligence.
“We acquired part of an enterprise dataset from Spirit Airlines, which can be helpful in improving our products and AI models,” a spokesperson for Google said in a statement to CNN, which confirmed it will not receive any personal information as part of the purchase.
Numerous airlines have said they are making increasing use of AI to set fares and schedule more efficiently. Another AI company, Mercor.io, had the second highest bid of $7.5 million for Spirit’s data. A bankruptcy court Judge Sean Lane is due to rule on the sale of the data at a hearing on Wednesday.
The sale is unusual, even if airline bankruptcies are not. Most bankrupt airlines are purchased whole, including their data, by another airline which folds it into those operations. But Spirit was the first significant US airline in 25 years that was forced to halt operations entirely, rather than be sold off to another airline.

This is the equivalent of building Frankenstein with Abby Normal’s Brain.
Google is evil.
Does that include all the entertaining videos? Oh, never mind. That is Youtube property....
Yup, all of those Mega Data Centers under construction will be filled with all kinds of data.
I am certain all of the Spirit Airlines data will be necessary for AI to discover the cure for the ‘common cold’. (sarc)
When will the Tech Bros honestly tell we proles exactly what ‘data’ they intend to gather and exactly what they will use the ‘data. for.
Creepy
“””a spokesperson for Google said in a statement to CNN, which confirmed it will not receive any personal information as part of the purchase.””””
As Bill Clinton was wont to say: “It depends on what the word is is”.
Or in current Google speak: “It depends on what the phrase ‘personal information’ is.”
Spirit Airlines data files would contain ‘personal information’ like:
1. Person’s name
2. Person’s residential address
3. Person’s email address
4. Person’s phone numbers
5. Person’s credit card information.
How much luggage they checked.
If they needed an extra seat or two.
If they ever felt ‘dissed.’
If they paid for drinks.
If they got banned for fighting.
How to lose your bag in three easy steps.
They and the government will use all that data to track us more than they do now and enslave us even more.
So is Big Air.
Google is almost completely staffed by Indians.
They do.
Failure to read the TOS is no excuse — Google/Gemini is SOC2 (I think L3 at this point) compliant. This means that if you *choose* to use it, the TOS explicitly lays out how the platform/service can you use your data. And you can choose NOT to use it if you prefer. If your beef is with Spirit and how *they* failed to document (and undergo trust certificate audits), take it up with them (or, I guess, get in line with the court as they’re dissolved).
I suppose if you want Big Government to protect you, you can advocate for something like GDPR (Global Data Privacy Regs) like the EU has.... but it’s ridiculous overkill pain.
Personally, being a fan of free markets and individual choice? I prefer buyer/user beware - read the TOS if you care that much and then choose to or not to use the system or service. But, I know the idea of Big Government Protecting You is increasingly popular everywhere.
“ This is the equivalent of building Frankenstein with Abby Normal’s Brain.”
That is great and right on target.
Goog L is evil.
This is the biggest truth out there. Every app/program wants you to use Chrome or log into their site using Goog L
The worst of the worst data gathering mega-evil corporations.
We should seed Spirit data with The Great Books.
We should seed Spirit data with The Great Books.
