‘The Brink of War’ Makes Reagan Human, Not a Caricature

Jeff Daniels, Jared Harris bring world leaders to life in smart historical drama

[Jeff] Daniels’ Reagan leans heavily on his good sense of humor, a grasp of basic psychology and endless resolve. He isn’t a caricature or a man teetering on the edge of senility. In fact, taking 2024’s “Reagan” out of the equation, it’s the most positive portrayal of the world leader in any Hollywood production.

That’s because it hails from Angel Studios, not La La Land.

“The Brink of War” isn’t dumbed down, but it’s accessible enough for teen viewers as well as adults. It’s hard to grasp the scope of the meeting if audiences weren’t alive back in 1986.

What’s most shocking – slash -welcome? President Reagan’s frequent attacks on the inhumanity at the heart of Communism. “War” doesn’t overplay that message, but it’s a welcome departure from Hollywood’s head-in-the-sand approach to the fascist cause.

Daniels is outstanding here, giving a consistently strong performance that isn’t bogged down by unnecessary tics or personal attacks on the president. He’s not deified, per se, and his stubbornness and folksy charm both help and hinder the mission in play.

Sounds like an okay movie However, I never got the sense we were on the “brink of war” in 1986.

Me either, the Soviet Union in those days appeared to be falling apart, they had gone thru multiple old leaders who died off shortly after assuming power.

In just 3 years after 1986 the entire thing came tumbling down, the Berlin Wall came down, and a lot of former Soviet Bloc countries became independent.

Not on the brink but that at any moment there could be a crisis involving nuclear weapons. In retrospect, it appears that the old Soviet leaders were very cautious. Other than the Cuban missile crisis, I doubt that we were really close to direct military action with the Communist bloc.

We weren't. What I remember from that period was that big media portrayed Reagan as the bad guy and fawned over Gorbechev. Tagline accurate back then as well.

Obviously the title is a marketing ploy designed to heighten interest in seeing the movie. I’ll see it anyways just to support Angel Studio’s. Frankly I’d like to see Hollywood and it’s horde of Commies go out of business.

The tension of 1984 and 1985 was incredible for some of us, I felt better in 1986 than 84/5.

Much as I think Jeff Daniels is a left-progressive loon, it is undeniable that the man has acting chops. His protrayal of George Washington was amazing in “The Crossing.” His portrayal of a psychopathic gang leader in the streaming mini-series “Godless” was absolutely chilling.

It is true that after Chernobyl, a lot of people started to see the rot in the old Soviet Union. They also showed weakness by withdrawing from Afghanistan in 1988. By 1989, with the fall of the Berlin wall, there was no question that communism in East Europe was on its way out.

How ironic that it’s now having a resurgence of sorts in the West. Just goes to show you that it only takes 1-2 generations to totally forget/ignore history.

The one thing the left, socialists, and communists do exceedingly well is control the education system.

It’s not surprising that we are raising a generation of young people who hate the country when all they hear in school is how terrible the US is and how awful it’s past is nothing more than a colonizing force who used slavery to build the nation.

I have not seen this yet but I may. I’ve seen reviews that say that Daniels (as liberal as he is) does a good job portraying Reagan. And that Reagan is portrayed as the good guy. Jared Harris is always great too, as is JK Simmons.

It was funny watching them die, Reagan kept facing a new one.

I think that by the time it came to appoint ruler number 4, that Russia felt the need to find a more accommodating guy to face Reagan, although I never see anyone speculate on the idea that Reagan so consistently and effectively being Reagan and then being rewarded with a 49 state sweep of America, forced the choice of a Gorbachev type.

Gorbachev was partly the patsy chosen to face Reagan, he wasn’t the hero that the media tries to make him as they try to divert the glory from Reagan, the Russian empire was broken and brought down, against its wishes, by a master strategist with a lifelong goal.

Many good points made here. Gorbachev was scared of SDI at a time when it was still a concept. The meeting was hastily arranged ahead of schedule because nothing could get agreed on. Gorby was trying to catch the old man off guard. Didn’t work. The left here was useless. I can remember Bruce Babbitt, one of the 1988 seven dwarfs criticizing Reagan for not taking up the offer. Did it at in nationally televised debate. I thank god none of those wusses got elected.
