President Donald Trump is ordering the U.S. Navy to remove the advanced system used to launch fighter jets from its newest type of aircraft carrier and return to using older steam catapults that he has long said he prefers, according to a directive issued Thursday.
The new mandate would likely cost billions of dollars and revert the Navy’s most advanced ships to a system that takes more sailors to operate and is more difficult to maintain.
The memo directs the Pentagon and the Navy to present Trump with plans to remove the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, also known as EMALS, within two months. It also says the Ford-class carrier’s electromagnetic weapons elevators should be replaced.
The move comes after years of Trump railing against the new, magnetically powered catapult system that shoots fighter jets off the deck of the carriers. It also comes at a time when the U.S. military is trying to find funding from Congress for all its desired equipment and as the Navy is struggling to fill its ships with enough sailors.

This decision is late. They finally got the bugs worked out of EMALS and the Weapons Elevators and now he wants to lay-up the 2 newest carriers (Ford & JFK) for years and delay the next 2 carriers for re-designs and long lead time items? Really, really stupid.

That's nice ... and completely irrelevant.
This seems like a smear job. Why aren’t they telling his side of the story? All they say is that he “rails against them” and says they are “no good”.
There obviously must be some reason why he doesn’t like them. I have a very hard time believing that if you asked him why, he would just say they are “no good”. How would he even know how good they are? Has he launched jets with them?
Are they dangerous? Do they allow the enemy to do something? Is the company that makes them on the outs with Trump?
None of this makes sense.
Wonder what the US Navy will have to cancel to retrofit 2 EMALS systems? USS Ford and Kennedy.

No doubt Trump has spoken to many of these individuals, plus sailors with hands-on experience. He also would have the R&M figure$.
Sure it makes sense.
You can heat New York City buildings with steam. He gets steam.
He doesn’t know an electric field or a magnetic field from a football field.
You don't have to buy a degree to solve a problem.
I just think it's neat. It's "in his blood," so to speak.
