Flock Safety CEO apologizes for license plate reader misuse, announces policy changes

The CEO of Flock Safety apologized Thursday for cases in which law enforcement agencies misused the company’s license plate reader technology and announced a series of policy changes aimed at preventing further abuse.

“The short message would be, I’m sorry. I’m sorry that the system has failed you,” CEO Garrett Langley said.

Langley said the company is recommending law enforcement agencies reduce the time camera data is stored from 30 days down to seven.

Earlier this week, New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon revealed his office had been storing license plate reader data for 90 days. McMahon said the office would reduce its retention period to 30 days, which according to Langley, is what Flock initially recommended in the first place.

“We’re also updating our operating policy by reducing the retention period for LPR data from 90 days to 30 days and further strengthening our auditing procedures,” Sheriff McMahon announced on Monday as part of a series of changes. “An internal audit of the system will be conducted every month and provided directly to me for my review. Technology should never operate without accountability.”

Flock Safety Internal Response: Dammit, we’ve been caught! Hopefully our new plan will stop Congress from either shutting us down or requiring warrants for access.

Is his name Eric Stratton?

Ladies and gentlemen, I’ll be brief.

The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests - we did. [winks at Dean Wormer]

But you can’t hold a whole fraternity responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn’t we blame the whole fraternity system?

And if the whole fraternity system is guilty, then isn’t this an indictment of our educational institutions in general? I put it to you, Greg - isn’t this an indictment of our entire American society?

Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but I for one am not going to stand here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America. Gentlemen!

When I was a kid my dad was stationed at Rhein-Main, and we had the opportunity to go to Berlin. I still have my passport with the Checkpoint Charlie stamp. The second most vivid memory for me behind the wall itself was sitting at a fountain in a platz and seeing the department store's roof was festooned with cameras surveilling the public in the square. Gave me chills as a kid, before I ever read 1984 (coincidentally, 83-85 is when we were stationed in Germany).

Now it's here.

If we can’t keep vidictive spouses out of the Flock spy cam system, we sure can’t keep the Chinese out.

Israel hacked Iran’s Flock cameras. They knew when and where the leaders were meeting. They know where they meet and live. Then they bombed them:

Undoubtedly the Chinese have done the same here. They know where our leases are meeting. They know who their illicit lovers are.

It opens us up not only to massive attack, but individual leaders to blackmail.

You ever wonder why justice John Roberts vote crazy? John Thune? Because the Chicoms have massive dirt on them, courtesy of Flock.

It should have been obvious that the system was ripe for misuse. But that didn’t stop governments. They always choose to restrict freedom whenever they can.

Who anointed these basement Nerds to become our overlord and law enforcement agency? These kind are a danger to our free republic. Their company should be shut down and be hit with lawsuits.

this abuse is easy to fix: legislatures simply make it a felony with mandatory minimum 10 year prison sentence to utilize FLOCK data for personal use ...

Nailed it 100%. I was in China over 10 years ago and they had an extensive system of similar cams about every freaking 20’!! Plus some serious audio listening devices on poles so they could hear everything you said.

Sick place regardless of what their paid YouTube propagandists say. And the US is trying to adopt the same system.

You know what a skilled hunter does when he sees a flock above him? He lets loose and takes care of business. Glad to see so many Americans doing the same!
