US can keep naval blockade on Iranian ports "indefinitely," Pentagon chief says

The U.S. military has enough assets to maintain a naval blockade of Iran indefinitely, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Thursday, adding ships could be rotated in and out of the region as needed.

Hegseth's comments suggest he is advising U.S. President Donald Trump that the ‌U.S. military can keep applying economic pressure on Iran for as long as needed to help so-far failed negotiations to end the conflict, begun in February.

He spoke in Panama after addressing the crew aboard the USS Gridley, a guided-missile destroyer, which had previously deployed to the Middle East.

Sounds like a never ending blockade. Wonder how much that is going to cost.

Other than the bit of extra jet fuel and ammunition they use not much more than standards ops.

GOOD. Civilized nations could get together to eliminate the root cause.

To help explain this to the non-military as to why it won’t cost much more.

First carriers are always deploying when not in maintenance. And in maintenance that costs money too.

But the sailors get paid whether they are laying on the beach or on a ship at sea. They do get sea pay, which honestly isn’t much (sadly).

The pilots need airtime, so either they fly real missions or they fly play pretend missions (like flying over the super bowl).

So the only real added costs are the increased fly time and fuel/munitions that are needed to do that.

Yep. I’m a bit sad that Trump hasn’t put this on Europe to deal with and the Middle East.

Middle East is somewhat stepping up but Europe and Asia that need that oil are not!

Let them suffer with higher oil costs. Those that help (like Japan) let their tankers through...Britain don’t let them through.

Sounds like the costs are not that much more than normal training exercises cost...

Only the excessive expenditure of munitions is different...

Worth the price of testing virtually every weapon system that we will be using after the chicoms invade from their foothold in Canada...

The penetrator bombs in particular are probably being designed to collapse at least 25 of the chicom dams...

An efficient and clean non-nuclear method to attain a 90% reduction in the chicom population...

Unlimited abortion...

First we have to return the United States to its former self-sufficient manufacturing pre-1960 status...

Our naval assets are always deployed somewhere. It might as well be the Straits of Hormuz.

The new norm. Minimal action to shut them down. We were in a Cold War for 50 years so at least Trump is fighting back.

That should be easy to do.

IMHO, Iran suffers far more from a blockade of their ports than we do from Hormuz.

I think time is on our side. People are impatient, but with a blockade shutting down what is 23% of Iran's national income but MOST of their governments revenue (>50%), every day is a gut punch for them.

I am fairly sure we knew Iran might do this, and our side already had the plans in place on how we will react, i.e. blockade.

The impact on us is minimal. Even for the Asian economies where most of that oil and gas go. Some ships are getting through. There already is a small pipeline. The US and Venezuela are ramping up oil production as are others and Iran was 4.6% of the worlds oil production prior to all this.

I was was thinking, the folks hurt mostly in this are Iran's neighbors, but truth is, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are seeing 3% or more growth.

Iran just doesn't have the sort of leverage with Hormuz our MSM claimed they had.

But I do think our blockade is having an effect, and that effect grows by the day. That is why I do not see Trump in any rush right now.

News like this miss the point: https://www.kptv.com/2026/08/11/trump-pivots-back-sanctions-iran-other-strategies-end-his-war-fizzle/

Time is on our side. There's no rush. Let that regime squirm as a blockade strangles the finances of this regime.

“Wonder how much that is going to cost.”

Probably less than a nuke going off in Boston Harbor.

Got any more stupid questions?

There’s not two navies in the world that could break a USN blockade.

Probably not even 3 together.

Do they really need to rotate in and out? The Abraham Lincoln is there now; couldn’t they just stay there indefinitely with sporadic resupply ship deliveries when supplies get crisis low?

So… you wanted to know what it’s like being a sailor, living aboard a small floating city, and generally what it’s like being at sea for months at a time. Well, here are a few (oh yeah, there are plenty more) suggestions, just in case you really wanted to try it. Enjoy!

Buy a steel dumpster, paint it haze-gray inside and out, and live in it for six months.
Run all the pipes and wires in your house exposed on the walls.
Repaint your entire house every month. Color Choices: Haze Grey or Dark Grey.
Renovate your bathroom (and henceforth always refer to it as the “head”). Build a wall across the middle of the bathtub (shower-stall) and move the showerhead to chest level. When you take a shower, make sure you turn off the water while you soap down. (Wet down, turn off water, soap down, Turn on water rinse down! “Navy Shower”) (“Hollywood Showers” are showers that last more than one (1) minute).
Raise the thresholds and lower the headers of your front and back doors by at least one foot, so that you either trip or bang your head every time you pass through them.
Disassemble and inspect your lawnmower… every week.
On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, turn your water heater temperature up to 200 degrees. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, turn the water heater off. On Saturdays and Sundays tell your family they use too much water during the week, so no bathing will be allowed. (And to simulate the Navy… call it “water hours”).
Raise your bed to within 6 inches of the ceiling, so you can’t turn over without getting out and then getting back in. Put all your clothes under your mattress to press them!
Sleep on the shelf in your closet. Replace the closet door with a curtain. Have your spouse whip open the curtain about three (3) hours after you go to sleep, shine a flashlight in your eyes, and say “Sorry, wrong rack.”
Make your family qualify to operate each appliance in your house: dishwasher operator, blender technician, etc. (call it “PQS Qualifications”).
Have your neighbor come over each day at 6 am, blow a whistle loudly, and shout “Reveille, reveille, all hands heave out and trice up.”
Have your mother-in-law write down everything she’s going to do the following day, then have her make you stand in your back yard at 6 am while she reads it to you. (Just for grins, call it “Morning Muster Call”).
Submit a request chit to your father-in-law requesting permission to leave your house before 3 pm. (call it “Early-Liberty”).
There will be more…
