Uber and Lyft drivers across California gathered in Los Angeles on Tuesday, where they claimed what they call one of the "largest new organizing victories in modern labor history."
Members of the California Gig Workers Union said they expect to be certified as the collective bargaining representative for California Uber and Lyft drivers after a 30-day waiting period. They say they were informed that they'd reached the threshold required to represent California drivers by the Public Employment Relations Board on Friday.

In statements, Uber and Lyft vowed to work closely with the newly formed union.
"This certification is the next step in delivering on AB 1340, a historic compromise that gives drivers a pathway to representation while preserving the independence and flexibility they've consistently said they value the most," Uber said in a statement. "We look forward to our work ahead with the California Gig Workers Union and the state."

It would be strange to have a driver belong to different unions if the locals don't go the same for both Uber and Lyft.

So I guess the lawsuits around drivers being employees vs independent contractors was just a way to get them to the table with the unions.
This will be instant karma when ride share pull out of LA.

How come businesses cannot be monopolies, but unions can?
There should be multiple unions for one industry and they should compete against each other for work.
I really liked Uber and Lyft, now this will probably ruin them.
I guess California will go after taxes from Uber and the drivers now. They will now discover they will be making less than fast food workers
I bet Uber and Lyft can justify ending service in California when all the added costs are shifted to them. Changes complete structure that created a business opportunity

Waymo will eliminate the need for the union unless it’s the mechanics that service the fleet. They’ll be working the midnight shift when the cars are not needed.
All this means is the union will get their cut, drivers will make less and fares will go up, and up......
Look at the bright side. California’s weather will make walking more pleasant when the unions kill Uber and Lyft.
The California Gig Workers Union is part of the SEIU leviathan. Just how much will they have to pay SEIU to keep their jobs?
God forbid a driver does not want to be part of the collective. They will be attacked mercilessly to get their mind right.

Form a large number of friends who would drive you in your local area and paid as a friend in cash. Eliminates a lot of problems.
I remember when Uber and Lyft were recruiting car owner/drivers touting the independence and freedom of ‘being your own boss’ while their computers eliminate the hassles of actually operating a business..
