We Fed the Dragon – and Lost the Narrative
RealClearPolitics ^ | 8/9/26 | Chris Fenton

For nearly two decades, Pew Research Center surveys delivered the same reliable finding: The world viewed the United States more favorably than China. That era is over. In its July 2026 report, Pew found China now ranks higher in favorability than the United States across most of the 36 countries surveyed. Gallup data from 2025 already showed China’s median approval edging past America’s. Confidence in Xi Jinping now exceeds confidence in Donald Trump by a clear margin in the countries Pew tracks annually. The Council on Foreign Relations rightly asked what happened. The answer is simpler – and more damning – than most analysts want to admit.

The single most influential reason China looks better to the world than the United States is that Western media, Hollywood, journalists, multinational corporations, sports leagues, politicians, and cultural institutions have been systematically unable, or unwilling, to portray China in any meaningfully negative light. Beijing made the rules clear: Criticize us, depict our system honestly, or even hint at Taiwan’s separate status, and you lose access to the world’s largest consumer market. The penalty for disobedience is banishment.

We complied. The result is a global information environment in which America’s flaws are dissected in real time while China’s are airbrushed out of existence.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Between our rush to deindustrialize and push production to China as fast as we could a generation ago, to the trump card China now holds in media portrayals of its repressive government, Western fecklessness has been a primary enabler of the rise of China.

I think a lot of what Trump has been doing is all part of a grand strategy to weaken, even destroy, China. It needs to be done. It’s the right thing to do. I never worry about Russia — but China is a problem that needs to go away.

The article failed to mention Big Tech as well.(Or I missed it)

Its still being fed though. Other than Bud Light (was), there is not really a big push to stop being a customer of these places/organizations/institutions/businesses.

Convenience is king, and China is the king of convenience.

Personally, I think this is BS. How many people want to emigrate to the US vs China? What person would think the CCCP would treat them more fairly?

The other factor besides China being portrayed in a favorable light is the USA in general, and Trump in particular, being portrayed in as unfavorable light as possible by our media and celebrities.

I’m pretty sure a lot of that unfavorable coverage is directly or indirectly financed by China.

Been happening since the 80s. Everybody loved China in the 80s.

Even the movie “Red Dawn” made the point that the Chinese were our “friends”.

Potus, Musk and the entire tech oligarchy have nothing but praise for Communist China.

Trump dropped the covid reparations he ran on. China will never be held accountable for the covid biolab leak and the chaos caused from that.

Trump no longer even brings it up or the 10 Trillion he said China owed the world. That certainly helps their image.

Not what I see. Mush constantly talks about the need to keep ahead of China technologically.

Yes, I do not hear Trump talking about accountability for Covid. But consider how the Democrats still idealize Dr. Fauci as a wonderful bureaucrat who should be emulated.

Nearly half the country bought into the lies Fauci peddled.

Are you not paying attention? Fauci and Pharma-Industrial Complex funded that.

It’s an incredibly twisted situation. Blaming it solely on the CCP is absurd.

Just praised them 2 days ago. He's been pro China forever. He's financially interlocked with their ecosystem, like the rest of the tech companies.
