Residents of an affluent Utah community are furious over a proposal to dramatically raise property taxes just months after their new city was formed.
The proposal has particularly angered residents because they voted to create Ogden Valley City after being told it could support itself without raising taxes.
Nearly 68 percent of voters backed incorporation in November 2024, according to KSL, and the city officially formed on January 2.
Ahead of the vote, an independent feasibility study commissioned through the Utah Lieutenant Governor's Office projected the city could maintain services with at least a five percent budget surplus and would not need an additional property tax levy.
The campaign supporting incorporation was even more explicit, telling voters: 'Let's be clear: incorporation will not raise taxes.'
Supporters said the city could instead tap revenue from short-term rental taxes, grants and impact fees 'without raising our taxes.'
But officials now say the financial outlook has changed.

To the retarded 68% I say:

How much DEI, leftist school crap, and welfare for trannies have they added to the budget?
But officials now say the financial outlook has changed.
This does happen SOMETIMES. (/s)
It sounds to me like they were lied to.
“For a home worth the area’s average $1.222 million, the city portion of the annual property tax bill would rise from $104.85 to $640.51 - an increase of $535.66.”
What is the total property tax?
THAT SEEMS LIKE A 500% INCREASE..
They never really understood what “self-government” really means.
Yeah, and when will the graft and misuse of city credit cards begin?
Mormans strapped for cash???
I seriously doubt that...
“after being told it could support itself without raising taxes”
and who told them that
and why did they believe that
Yep, Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! Bait and Switch strikes again.
Government looks on citizens as money trees where any amount can be picked off at their convenience. And elections do matter and falling for pie in the sky government promises is never wise.
That’s like annual dues for a neighborhood swim and tennis clubhouse.
Incorporation always raises property tax. Anyone in this case foolish enough to belive it wouldn’t eventually hit their pocket books deserves what they get. That’s why I live in a rural unincorporated community...and I’m happy to haul my garbage to the transfer station and pay to have my septic tank emptied every 5 years.
“But officials now say the financial outlook has changed.”
My long ago stock broker used to use a similar line after something he recommended collapsed: “Oh, the market changed”.
Total property tax annually there is 8187.4.

The property tax is horrible. If it’s 3% of the “value” of the home, then the government will have confiscated 100% of its full “value” in about 33 years.
So it’s not your property. It belongs to the government. It just makes you pay rent to stay in ‘your’ property.
If you don’t pay the government just takes your property. So it’s not ‘your’ property.
It never was your property. In real estate law you buy certain rights to use the property, not the property itself. Any taxes must be paid to continue the use.
I’m from the government, and I’m here to lie to you.
